If Manchester City’s defence struggled last season, it still remains well-stocked. Bayer Leverkusen are now eyeing a player who has been placed on the transfer list.

With the summer transfer window nearing its close, a few moves are still expected at Manchester City. The main focus remains, of course, on Gianluigi Donnarumma. While a deal has been agreed in principle, the Italian goalkeeper could ultimately decide to stay at PSG if negotiations drag on. In the defensive department, another player is also being pushed towards the exit.

Manchester City no longer counting on Manuel Akanji

Manuel Akanji is no longer part of Pep Guardiola’s plans. The Citizens want to sell him, and Galatasaray seemed close to completing a £15m move, but the deal fell through at the player’s request. With Crystal Palace also interested—potentially needing a replacement for Marc Guéhi—Bayer Leverkusen will now attempt to bring the Swiss defender back to the Bundesliga, according to The Independent.

After Claudio Echeverri joined Bayer Leverkusen on loan, the German club are targeting another Manchester City player. The 2024 German champions have already lost their defensive leader in Jonathan Tah. Following Xabi Alonso’s departure, the succession will be complicated, and Erik ten Hag will need experienced players to keep the team competitive.

While Manuel Akanji is valued at £25m, Manchester City could settle for less: around £15m. Slightly hampered by injury last season, the Swiss international (71 caps) played at a level below his usual standards, like many others at the English club. At 30, the former Borussia Dortmund player remains a reference at his position, but the Citizens are ready to move on.
