Man City vs Al Hilal predictions: Citizens to lead at the break

Key stats

  • Manchester City had the lead at half-time in each of their last five matches.
  • Al Hilal Riyadh are currently on an eight-match unbeaten run.
  • There were at least 11 corners in five of Al Hilal's last seven games.

Correct score prediction: Man City 4-1 Al Hilal

To be fair, Al Hilal have no losses in their last eight matches across all competitions, and they have held their own against European teams like Real Madrid and Red Bull Salzburg in this tournament.

However, Manchester City are coming off an impressive 5-2 victory over Juventus. They are not just the only team with a perfect record in this competition, but Pep Guardiola’s men have also averaged over four goals per game in the Club World Cup.

Taking everything into account, anything other than a comfortable victory for Man City would be a surprise.

Most recent H2Hs: Can Al Hilal improve their track record against English teams?

While this will be Manchester City's first encounter with a Saudi team, Al Hilal have lost two of two encounters with English sides (Chelsea, Newcastle), scoring no goals while conceding six times.

Man City preview: Looking to maintain their perfect record

Claudio Echeverri is ruled out of this game for City due to an ankle injury, as is defender Rico Lewis, whose ban was upgraded to three matches for the straight red he received in the opening win over Wydad AC. Lewis will be back for the quarterfinals if City progress.

Ballon d'Or holder Rodri is expected to start in midfield, alongside Bernardo Silva and summer signing Tijjani Reijnders. Erling Haaland began the Juve game from the bench, but should get the nod here with Savinho and Doku providing threats from the flanks.

Predicted lineup: Ederson (GK), Nunes, Diaz, Akanji, Nouri, Rodri, Silva, Reijnders, Doku, Savinho & Haaland

Al Hilal Riyadh preview: Eyeing their first victory over European opponents

Salem Al-Dawsari could be unavailable for this game after sustaining an injury in the win over Pachuca in their last Group H game. Al Hilal needed the victory to advance to the round of 16, and thanks to goals from Al-Dawsari and Marcos Leonardo, the Saudi side got the job done.

Of the teams that qualified, Al Hilal is one of only two teams that scored only three goals in the group stage, which is ten fewer than what their Tuesday opponents scored.

Up against a free-scoring City side, Simeone Inzaghi's men will look to do the unthinkable – what no team has so far done against Pep Guardiola’s side. And with the ever-reliable Bono in goal, and the centre-back pairing of Hassan Al Tambakti and Kalidou Koulibaly steadying the ship, they will fancy their chances against the Premier League giants.

Predicted lineup: Bono (GK), Cancelo, Tambakti, Koulibaly, Lodi, Al-Dawsari, Neves, Malcom, Milinkovic-Savic, Kano & Leonardo

Player to watch: Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland has been in sensational form, scoring five goals and providing an assist in his last six appearances for club and country. The Norwegian forward has scored in back-to-back games and will look to extend his scoring run to three games.
