Manchester City, who will have Enzo Maresca as their manager from 2026-27, have already begun moving in the market in search of reinforcements for next season. One of the names to have gained traction behind the scenes is that of Pedro Porro, a standout performer for Tottenham Hotspur.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, City have opened negotiations in an attempt to sign the right-back in this transfer window, amid the overhaul taking shape following the end of Pep Guardiola's long era in charge of the team.
Even without winning the Premier League in the last two seasons, City remain competitive on the domestic front, having claimed both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. The board nevertheless believe that some positions need refreshing, particularly right-back, an area that showed inconsistency throughout 2025-26.
Porro endured a collectively turbulent season at Tottenham Hotspur, but managed to maintain a high individual level. The North London side spent much of the campaign under threat of relegation and only secured their Premier League survival on the final day, in a year marked by injuries, internal changes and managerial upheaval. Even so, the Spanish full-back was one of the few names to escape criticism.
City see Porro's experience and versatility as key assets
City's interest is also bound up with the player's history. Before breaking out at Sporting Lisbon, Pedro Porro actually belonged to the Manchester club, who signed him in 2019 but never gave him a run in the first-team squad. After loan spells and a permanent transfer to Portugal, his performances in Lisbon turned the full-back into a sought-after name on the European market.

In a Sporting Lisbon shirt, he won domestic titles and was an important part of the club's sporting project. His development was followed closely by Hugo Viana, City's current sporting director and a former executive at the Portuguese club, who knows the player's profile inside out and is said to be playing an important role in the talks over a possible return to the Etihad Stadium.
Beyond his attacking ability, Porro appeals through his tactical versatility. At different stages of his career he has operated as a wing-back, a conventional full-back and even as a third centre-back in a back three. That flexibility became even more apparent in the closing stretch of the season, when he had to adapt to various roles within a disorganised Tottenham Hotspur side that was constantly affected by changes of system.
Tottenham Hotspur try to resist, but the outlook is worrying
Despite City's growing interest, Tottenham Hotspur have no intention of making it easy to let one of their most important players leave. Spurs have already begun talks to extend the player's contract, which currently runs until June 2028, but have not yet been able to make progress in negotiations. Internally, there is a feeling that it will be difficult to keep hold of him in the face of interest from a rival of City's calibre.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi, who took charge of the London side with the task of reorganising the squad after a disappointing season, regards Pedro Porro as a fundamental piece in the team's rebuild.
Even so, Tottenham Hotspur are already working with the possibility of receiving official offers in the coming weeks. According to the Spanish newspaper, the London club have set an initial figure of around £50m to open negotiations.
With the World Cup approaching and a transfer window that promises intense activity among Europe's giants, Pedro Porro's situation looks set to develop new chapters quickly.
For City, the signing would represent the arrival of a player ready to compete at a high level immediately. For Tottenham Hotspur, his potential departure would be another challenge amid the club's rebuilding process.
