One of the most successful partnerships in modern English football is coming to an end. After nine seasons of near-perfect tactical alignment under Pep Guardiola, Bernardo Silva has confirmed he will leave Manchester City at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. The Portuguese midfielder made the announcement in an open letter.
What has truly shaken the market, however, is not the departure itself — long anticipated — but the identity of an unexpected new suitor: Arsenal.
Arsenal interest in Bernardo Silva
According to ESPN journalist Bruno Andrade, the north London club are closely monitoring Silva's situation. Despite the interest, it is currently being treated with caution and regarded as a more remote possibility. The main stumbling block would be the intense recent rivalry between the two clubs at the top of the Premier League.
At 31, Silva believes he still has a future at the highest level of European football. After an impeccable stint at City — 452 appearances, 19 trophies — the Portuguese international is prioritising a move to a club that can offer him genuine competition for major honours. Approaches from alternative markets such as Saudi Arabia are an ever-present reality for players of his age, but Silva has made clear he has no intention of leaving the European elite at this stage of his career.

Seeing a key figure of Guardiola's City move to one of the clubs that have come closest to ending the Citizens' Premier League dominance would be a striking and complex development, and Silva's own affection and respect for the Manchester club adds another layer to the equation.
Juventus lead the race — Barcelona also in the picture
While Arsenal's interest is still taking shape, other clubs already have more concrete plans in place. Juventus have moved fastest, turning their interest into a structured proposal. The Old Lady's hierarchy see Silva as a rare market opportunity — arriving at his next club without a transfer fee once his City contract expires.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Juventus made their first contact before Easter through agent Jorge Mendes. The Italian club are currently the only side to have put forward a concrete plan, outlining not only financial terms but also the strategic role Silva would play in their squad. The idea in Turin is clear: to make him the centrepiece of Luciano Spalletti's system and hand him an absolute starring role in the club's rebuilding project.
Barcelona, meanwhile, represent a destination that appears to align naturally with where Silva finds himself in his career. With the Catalans close to another La Liga title and projecting a strong Champions League return, Camp Nou offers the level of competitiveness Silva demands. Spain is also a market where his technical, cerebral style of play has always been appreciated.
Despite all the external activity, Silva is in no rush. His decision on where to play from the second half of 2026 will be made calmly — the plan is to wait until after the World Cup before signing anywhere. Until then, his commitment to City remains absolute, with the Premier League and FA Cup still to play for.
As for Benfica — a club he supports and of which he is a member — a return does not feature in his immediate plans. The desire to end his career in Lisbon is real and openly stated, but Silva sees that as a step for the future, not the next transfer window.
