Luton Town transfer targets for summer 2023: Hatters look to the loan market

Who are the Luton Town transfer targets going into the last few weeks of the summer window? We've got you covered in this article as we take a look at the latest reports surrounding the Hatters, with depth still required all over the pitch.

Luton Town are busy gearing up for their first-ever season in the Premier League, having last played in the top tier before back in 1991 when it was the old First Division. They have begun life back amongst the English elite as relegation favourites, but some smart recruitment between now and the end of the transfer window could give them a fighting chance of staying in the league.

They’ve already made a few additions with the likes of Marvelous Nakamba, Tahith Chong, Mads Andersen, Ryan Giles and Ross Barkley joining the Bedfordshire club. It’s clear that Luton are happy to look to the Championship or in Andersen’s case even League One for fresh blood as they aim to bolster their squad ahead of the new season.

We are likely to see more players who impressed in last season's Championship arrive at Kenilworth Road while Luton may also target the Premier League loan market as the deadline gets closer.

Who are the Luton Town transfer targets?

Here are some of the players believed to be on Luton’s radar heading into the last few weeks of the summer transfer window.

Cameron Archer

Aston Villa forward Cameron Archer is in high demand this summer on the back of his impressive loan spells in the Championship last season and his role in England winning the U21 Euros back in July.

The 21 year old is now back at Villa, but with the club heading for European football this season, reports suggest Archer could be sent out for another loan spell.

This would be the perfect move for the Hatters to try and take advantage of. Luton are in need of a goalscorer and they would be able to guarantee Archer regular minutes.

A permanent deal is unlikely and Luton would have to fend off a whole host of competition to secure Archer’s signature.

Cody Drameh

A familiar face to fans of Luton is 21 year old Cody Drameh, who spent the second half of last season on loan with the Hatters. Drameh made 19 appearances as he helped Luton reach the Premier League via the play-offs.

Drameh has returned to parent club Leeds United, with the club wanting to keep hold of the versatile wing-back as they face life back in the Championship. Luton have depth in Drameh’s position, but his ability to play in multiple positions would make him a key asset.

Luton would be offering familiarity and regular playing time in the Premier League, but Leeds are likely to want a hefty fee for Drameh, rather than another loan.

With the ongoing financial issues at Leeds, they may be forced to sell, and if that time comes, Luton should be doing everything they can to get Drameh back to Kenilworth Road.

Hannibal Mejbri

Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri is another potential target. The 20-year-old was one of the more impressive performers on United’s pre-season tour of the USA. However, he’s unlikely to be part of Erik ten Hag’s first-team plans this season, making a loan move a real possibility.

Luton would be a great option, with plenty of playing time on offer and a chance to get Premier League experience in a free-flowing team. Rob Edwards record of player development could entice Mejbri to the club.

Several Championship clubs may also be open to taking the midfielder who, despite limited game-time in Manchester, has already racked up 24 caps for Tunisia and featured at the 2022 World Cup. However, the ability to offer Premier League football could give Luton the edge in the race for his loan signature. The issue of loan restrictions in the Premier League could come into play, but Mejbri is one to keep an eye on.

Keinan Davis

Luton do have a number of strikers on their books but with departures expected, there could still be room for a fresh attacking addition. One potential target is Keinan Davis who is expected to leave Aston Villa having spent the last two seasons on loan in the Championship.

He played a key role in helping Nottingham Forest to promotion in 2021/22 but was less impressive at Watford last season.

The 25 year old has never been a prolific goalscorer but is a powerful and effective hold up player with lots of qualities that could appeal to Rob Edwards who signed Davis when he was Watford boss last summer.

Whatever happens from now until the end of the transfer window, Luton are certainly up against it this season, but do not write them off yet, with this youthful side sure to cause some upsets along the way.
