Lorient to win

Lorient have won the last three meetings and are unbeaten in five.

After both sides opened the 2026-27 Ligue 1 campaign with draws, Lorient and Troyes will be aiming for their first win of the season when they meet at Stade Yves Allainmat-Le Moustoir.

Saturday’s clash marks the first top-flight meeting between the teams since 2023, with both clubs having recently earned promotion back to the elite tier of French football over the last two seasons.

After securing a ninth-place finish with 45 points, Lorient were the most impressive of last season's three promoted sides, enjoying a successful return to Ligue 1 when many expected them to be fighting relegation.

However, Les Merlus suffered a setback when head coach Olivier Pantaloni, who led them to Ligue 2 glory, declined a contract extension to take over at OGC Nice. Lorient responded by appointing Alexandre Dujeux, who narrowly kept Angers up last term.

Dujeux's first assignment was against his predecessor, and the 50-year-old will be slightly disappointed not to have taken all three points from a match where his side created the better chances.

Nonetheless, it was an encouraging display from Lorient ahead of their home opener against a side they have beaten in three straight meetings without conceding, and are unbeaten against in their last five encounters.

However, Lorient will be wary of their recent home league form, having lost their last two matches of last season after suffering just one defeat in their first 15 home games.

Back in Ligue 1 after a three-year absence, Troyes can look to Lorient's 2025-26 campaign for inspiration and securing three points on Saturday would be the perfect way to kick-start their own season.

Stephane Dormont's side opened the campaign with a goalless draw against Paris FC, their third consecutive stalemate. However, the result extended their unbeaten run to seven matches dating back to pre-season.

After losing 15 of 19 away matches in the 2022-23 Ligue 1 campaign, ESTAC paid the price for their travel woes. They will need a much stronger record on the road this time to have any hope of survival.

Troyes' draw with Paris marked their fourth clean sheet in five competitive outings, and another shutout this weekend would be the ideal foundation for a first victory of the new season.

Whispers predicts: Lorient 2-1 Troyes

Lorient's strong record in this fixture, combined with home advantage, makes them favourites, and we fancy them to claim all three points at 4/5 (1.80).

Under 4.5 cards has been a common occurrence in this fixture, so a repeat this weekend at 2/3 (1.67) appeals.

Both Lorient and Troyes kept clean sheets on the opening weekend, but we expect both teams to score at 9/10 (1.90) in this contest.
