Whisper+ analysis

Authenticity (3/5): Liverpool set to beat Real Madrid in Frimpong race

It was previously reported that Liverpool have shown an interest in signing the Leverkusen wing-back, who has also been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Defensa Central are now reporting that an intermediary has informed the Spanish giants that Liverpool are on the verge of recruiting Frimpong for the 2025-26 season.

Value (4.5/5): Value for money

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier this month that Frimpong has a release clause in his Leverkusen contract which is believed to be in the region of  €40m (£33.5m).

That represents good value for money for a player who has developed into a top star in the Bundesliga under the watch of Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.

Suitability (3.5/5): Attack-minded defender

Frimpong has scored four goals and provided 11 assists in 40 competitive appearances this season, highlighting the sort of attacking prowess which could suit the Premier League.

With that said, there may be some concern that he plays as a wing-back on the right of a midfield four for Leverkusen, meaning he may have to adjust to playing on the right side of a back four if he made the switch to Anfield.

Upgrade? (3.5/5): Alexander-Arnold successor

Frimpong is seemingly viewed as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is out of contract at the end of the season. Real Madrid do not appear to be too disappointed by the possibility of missing out on Frimpong, with Los Blancos believed to be in pole position to sign Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer.

The Dutchman is similar to Alexander-Arnold in the sense they both excel in their attacking play, although the latter has set a high bar given his importance to Liverpool over the years.

Logic (4/5): Premier League move makes sense

Having spent over four years in Germany, a move to the Premier League seems to be the logical next step for Frimpong. Liverpool would surely be a strong option because they should be able to offer him the chance to consistently challenge for silverware. However, the Reds will have to be mindful of interest from Manchester City, who could look to bring their academy product back to the Etihad Stadium.

Whisper+ verdict: 18.5/25

Frimpong seems to have the all attributes to be a worthy replacement for Alexander-Arnold, especially as he would be available for a reasonable price.  The Leverkusen star may also be open to a new challenge, but rival interest could hamper Liverpool's pursuit.
