The latest Liverpool transfer news reports that the Reds are eyeing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, but they will face stiff competition from other top Premier League clubs.
With Virgil Van Dijk's days at Anfield potentially numbered, he could also be joined by another name very familiar to incoming manager Arne Slot, as part of a potential summer revolution in defence.
Guehi could be the first signing of the imminent Arne Slot era at Anfield, as the Reds prepare for life after Jurgen Klopp.
Slot will have his own targets too, including versatile Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida.
Should the Reds sign both, their back four could be unrecognisable next season.
Liverpool transfer news: Matip replacement?
Cameroonian defender Joel Matip will call time on his four years on Merseyside this summer, with his contract set to expire.
Matip has been a quietly key figure in the Klopp era. When fit, he has been the preferred partner for Virgil van Dijk.
He will leave a big gap in the Reds’ squad. And Michael Edwards and co are not looking to take any risks in replacing Matip, with Premier League proven centre-back Marc Guehi top of the list.
Guehi has grown in presence and reputation since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in 2021. The 23-year-old is composed on the ball, excellent at defending one-on-one situations, and is now an England regular
But Liverpool will reportedly face competition for the Englishman, especially from Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle.
Liverpool transfer news: Slot’s Swiss Army Knife?
With the Reds leakier at the back than both Arsenal and Manchester City, more than just one reinforcement could be necessary in the back four.
Enter Lutsharel Geetruida. The 23-year-old Feyenoord star can play anywhere in defence, is capable of pushing up into advanced areas to produce goals and assists. He has scored six and assisted four this season
Alternatively, Geertruida can tuck into midfield to help progress play, allowing him to provide cover for a number of Liverpool players
Even better, the Dutch international is well-versed in Arne Slot’s methods, and could speed up the adaptation period for the Liverpool squad, and would join a growing Dutch contingent on Merseyside with Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo.
Geetruida’s price was quoted to RB Leipzig as £25.7m last summer, though that is likely to rise significantly, with Transfermarkt's current estimation of his value standing at £32m.
If the Reds could prise the promising defender away from Feyenoord, it could be quite a coup, and provide a double boost for Slot, as it was revealed Mo Salah will stay at Anfield.
