Italian winger Federico Chiesa was linked with a move away from Anfield throughout the transfer window, as his new spell has so far not gone according to plan. In the end, however, he remained at Liverpool for now. He scored his first Premier League goal in the opening match of the season, coming off the bench in the second half of the 4-2 win over Bournemouth. The 27-year-old also appeared as a substitute in wins over Newcastle and Arsenal, but in each case only played around 10 minutes.

Chiesa was also left out of Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League group stage last Thursday. The restriction on the number of non-homegrown players meant Chiesa was omitted in favour of Rio Ngumoh, who will turn 18 next September and is therefore still classified as homegrown under UEFA rules.

Besiktas interested in Chiesa

Although the main European leagues have already closed their transfer windows, a surprising exit option has emerged. Fabrizio Romano reported that Besiktas contacted Liverpool regarding the former Juventus winger.

The Turkish transfer window remains open until 11 September, allowing clubs to complete remaining deals. For example, Trabzonspor agreed a loan for Andre Onana from Manchester United, while Ilkay Gündogan moved from Manchester City to Galatasaray.

Besiktas parted ways with former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær last month after the team failed to qualify for the Champions League. Romano adds that the Turkish giants would likely be able to afford Chiesa. What is clear for now, however, is that Liverpool do not want to let him leave on loan.

On his YouTube channel, Romano explained: “Besiktas tried to contact Liverpool in the last 24 hours to understand the situation regarding Federico Chiesa. I can tell you that Liverpool do not want to loan him out. At this moment negotiations are not advanced. It’s nothing concrete, but they called about Chiesa.”

Chiesa joined Liverpool last year from Juventus for €12 million (£10.3m). His value at the time was €35 million (£29.9m), having previously been €65 million (£55.6m) in 2022. However, a difficult previous season saw his value drop to just €14 million (£12m). The player is contracted at Liverpool until 2028.
