Potential Europa League Round of 16 ties for Liverpool

The Reds will have to patiently wait for this preliminary round to be drawn and played out to know who they could face. Given how other clubs performed in Europe, West Ham and Brighton topped their respective groups, while Newcastle United and Manchester United finished bottom in their Champions League groups, Liverpool can face any team from the above list.

We're going to delve into some of the best and worst-case scenarios for Jurgen Klopp's side based on who is entering the preliminary round, with Liverpool currently the favourites to go all the way and win the competition with odds as short as 9/4 (3.25).

Liverpool vs Qarabag

While not being the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, given the nature of Qarabag playing their weekly football in Azerbaijan – a league not renowned for its competitive nature and high standards – this would be an ideal draw for Klopp, knowing a dominant first-leg could well kill the tie off just at the halfway mark.

Qarabag did well to finish ahead of Molde in their Europa League group but were comfortably in that second spot, losing twice to Bayer Leverkusen, which would suggest they're far from the standard Liverpool would set on the pitch.

Liverpool vs Young Boys

Despite Young Boys being the Swiss champions and dropping in from the Champions League, they will be one of the teams that Klopp and Liverpool fans will be hoping to get through the preliminary round and end up playing them at Anfield, having only mustered up four points in their respective group.

These sides have only faced each other twice in their history, with the Reds winning once and drawing the other game, so it would be a huge scalp for the Swiss side if they could beat Liverpool, although it's unexpected.

Liverpool vs AC Milan

AC Milan are one of the most iconic sides in club football for their history in Europe and Italy but have dropped out of the Champions League due to some poor performances. However, spirited displays against Newcastle United and PSG in the group stage helped them to finish third.

If they are to come through the preliminary round, Liverpool will be keen to avoid the Italy giants, although for the neutrals, it would be a magical tie given the history they have, especially in the Champions League finals.

Liverpool vs Galatasary

The Turkish giants are not anywhere near the most gifted or dominant side in this draw, but the thought of having to play them in their home stadium in what would be a terrifying atmosphere – something Man United can vouch for – would be a major thing for Liverpool to contend with.

Jurgen Klopp would ideally love to play someone other than the Turkish giants and a team with a less intimidating and raucous atmosphere in both home and away ties, having taken points off Man United in both fixtures.
