Lithuania, ranked 149th in the world, will take on 123rd-ranked Azerbaijan on Sunday night at the Darius and Girenas Stadium as the two sides prepare for a UEFA Nations League encounter in Group 2 of League D.

Rinktine have already kicked off their Nations League campaign with a 2-0 win against Liechtenstein on Thursday, while this will be the first game in the competition for Aykhan Abbasov's side, with this being one of just two groups in the entire competition containing three teams.

The 2024-25 Nations League saw Lithuania drawn into Group 2 in League C with Romania, Kosovo and Cyprus, with high expectations that Edgaras Jankauskas' side would be able to at least give a good account of themselves.

However, after all six matches had been played, Rinktine had lost every single one, scoring just four goals in the entire campaign.

They were subsequently relegated and therefore drawn into one of the only three-team groups in the 2026-27 edition of the Nations League.

More recently, the Baltic nation attempted to qualify for their first-ever World Cup but struggled in a tough Group G containing the Netherlands, Poland, Finland and Malta, picking up just three points from three draws to finish bottom.

Jankauskas' side's highlight of the campaign was a 2-2 stalemate at home to Finland, where they found themselves two goals down after just 17 minutes but fought back to rescue a memorable draw.

Since missing out on a place at this summer's World Cup, Lithuania took part in the Baltic Cup, where they lost to Estonia in the final before kicking off their Nations League campaign against Liechtenstein on Thursday evening where they secured a 2-0 win away from home.

As for the visitors, their wait to begin their Nations League campaign has been a few days longer than that of their upcoming opponents, with Azerbaijan waiting in the wings while the opening fixture between Jankauskas' side and Liechtenstein took place.

Despite that, they have still been in action during this international break, facing Tajikistan in a friendly on Wednesday, when they secured their second win in a row with a 1-0 victory courtesy of an Oleg Vaklov own goal.

Like Sunday's hosts, Aykhan Abbasov's Azerbaijan side struggled to impress during the last edition of the Nations League and were relegated after picking up just one point from six games in a group containing Sweden, Slovakia and Estonia.

Their 17 goals conceded in those six outings ranked among the highest totals in the competition and will be an immediate area they wish to improve in, something they have done across their two recent outings against San Marino and Tajikistan, where they have conceded just once.
