Ligue 1 remains one of Europe’s top five leagues due to its technical prowess, international cohort and emerging football prodigies. It has long been defined by Paris Saint-Germain's domestic dominance, and the 2025/26 season was no exception.
Luis Enrique's side clinched a record 14th title, sealing a fifth consecutive crown and moving four clear of any other club in French football history. Behind them, the chasing pack continues to shift – Lens, Marseille and Monaco – all changed managers in the off-season.
As focus turns to the 2026/27 campaign, a host of Ligue 1 players are entering the final year of their contracts. Ethan Mbappe, Sofiane Diop and several other promising talents are among those whose deals expire in June 2027.
With the January transfer window on the horizon, the coming months will determine whether these players extend their stays or become the subject of a scramble for their signatures. Here, Football Whispers provides a full list of the La Liga players whose contracts expire in the summer of 2027.
Ligue 1 expiring contracts 2027
The biggest Ligue 1 players out of contract in 2027
Olivier Giroud (Lille)
Arguably the biggest Ligue 1 name out of contract in the summer of 2027 is France icon Olivier Giroud. The former AC Milan and Arsenal hitman penned a one-year extension during the 2026 transfer window, extending his stay in the north of France until next summer.
In doing so, he became only the tenth player in Ligue 1 history to feature after his 40th birthday. Giroud joined Lille from Los Angeles FC in 2025 on a free transfer, and proved decisive as Lille finished the season in third position.
He has now established himself as a fan favourite, and the numbers defy his age. In November 2025, aged 39 years and 54 days, he became the oldest player to score a brace in Ligue 1 since the 1947/48 season.
Under Davide Ancelotti, Giroud continues to make a difference for Lille. He isn’t ready to hang up his boots just yet, with another season perhaps in his arsenal as the Mastiffs enjoy Champions League football.
Ethan Mbappe (Lille)
At 19, Ethan Mbappe is at the opposite end of his career to his Lille teammate Olivier Giroud. The left-footed, younger brother of Kyilian is under contract at Lille until June 2027.
The teenager has made 42 Ligue 1 appearances since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. Lille are desperate to keep him, offering a three-year extension, though negotiations have been complicated by disagreement over the length of the deal. Lille initially proposed a one-year extension, while Mbappe's camp pushed for a longer commitment.
Interest from rival clubs, including Marseille and Rennes, has accelerated Lille's push to secure his future. Mbappe's development, however, has been interrupted by injury, but Les Dogues view him as a key part of their long-term project.
The coming months will determine whether he signs a new deal or follows Giroud out the door as a free agent in 2027.
Sofiane Diop (Nice)
Born in France but a Morocco international, Sofiane Diop is one of Ligue 1’s most exciting assets. The 26-year-old moved from Monaco in 2022, and has been a mainstay at Nice for the past couple of seasons. 2025/26 was his best-performing season, with 10 goals in 46 appearances.
Diop has attracted interest from Marseille, who explored a move for him in the previous window. Russian side Spartak Moscow have also registered an interest, with L'Equipe reporting their intent to sign the winger.
Nice now face a tough decision as he is one of their top-rated players, at a stage where their finances have taken a hit due to on and off-field issues. Diop carries a market value of around €15m – the strongest among Nice's expiring assets.
With 12 players out of contract in 2027, Diop is one of six players the club is pondering to sell this summer rather than risk losing him for nothing come next summer.
