Leeds United’s struggles to hold onto a lead continued in midweek, as they surrendered a 2-0 advantage and eventually fell to a 6-3 defeat against Chelsea in the EFL Cup third round at Stamford Bridge.
Prior to that, Daniel Farke’s side had drawn 1-1 with both Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion despite opening the scoring in both games and now remain winless since beating Nottingham Forest in league and cup in their first two matches of the season.
However, the Whites are unbeaten in the Premier League this term and boast the division’s second-best defensive record behind Arsenal, although their attack could really do with some beefing up, having produced just three goals in as many games.
Leeds' Anton Stach is second in the Premier League for possession lost per game.
Leeds have not beaten Newcastle United in their last six attempts, but their home form provides some optimism, with the Whites unbeaten in six competitive matches at Elland Road since March 8.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin came off the bench to score in midweek, and with seven goals in his career against Newcastle, the Englishman will hope to add to his tally and inspire Leeds to victory.
Like Leeds, Newcastle United were in EFL Cup action during the week, edging a narrow 1-0 win over Championship side Millwall thanks to Joe Willock’s 81st-minute winner, which preserved their unbeaten start to the season.
After conceding twice in three of their previous four matches, Matthias Jaissle’s side secured a much-needed clean sheet ahead of their trip to West Yorkshire, where they have lost just once in nine visits since the turn of the millennium.
A win for the Magpies would move them into the top four – a position few would have predicted after a turbulent summer that saw the departure of several key players and long-serving manager Eddie Howe.
Only Aston Villa have created fewer big chances than Newcastle's five.
With new attacking signings Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Bazoumana Toure still settling in, there is likely more to come from this Newcastle side.
In the meantime, Monday’s visitors are still dealing with several injury absences, the latest being Amar Dedic. However, Tino Livramento's return has helped soften the blow.

Whispers predicts: Leeds United 2-2 Newcastle United
Leeds United have struggled in this fixture in recent years, but their strong home form leads us to back a draw at 5/2 (3.50).
The last meeting between Monday’s opponents produced a seven-goal thriller. While we do not expect similar levels of entertainment here, over 2.5 goals at 4/5 (1.80) and BTTS – Yes at 3/5 (1.60) both look solid options.
On a more adventurous note, a 2-2 correct score at 12/1 (13.00) could be worth a small punt, though it remains a long shot.
