We have now reached the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup, and although the aim of all 32 squads remaining in the tournament is to reach the final on Sunday, 19 July, the prospect of elimination should help move the transfer window along.

Two players competing in North America this summer feature in today's transfer roundup, while we also have news of a potential move to London for a Liverpool stalwart.

Below, Football Whispers runs through the biggest headlines from the last 24 hours.

Marcus Rashford has reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign for Tottenham this summer, with the Manchester United man still determined to secure a permanent transfer to Barcelona.

According to TEAMtalk, Spurs were prepared to pay Rashford's £40m release clause and his wages to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but the winger doesn't want to play for another English club.

Tottenham are planning a mass summer spending spree to overhaul their squad after a dismal season, and Rashford's rejection will come as a huge disappointment to Roberto de Zerbi.

The belief in Rashford's camp is that he will still be able to sign for Barcelona later in the window, despite the Spanish club refusing to pay his release clause thus far.

Chelsea close in on Granit Xhaka deal

Chelsea are on the verge of securing a shock deal for Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, with the Blues looking to bolster their midfield options ahead of the new season.

Xhaka, who only signed for Sunderland last summer, has a great relationship with new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who is keen to bring him in as one of his first signings.

According to Plettigoal, personal terms have already been agreed, and Chelsea are now in direct contact with Sunderland to negotiate a deal.

Considering Xhaka was formerly the Arsenal captain, this move is unlikely to go down well in North London should Chelsea get the deal over the line.

Arsenal target Curtis Jones

While their former captain closes in on a move to Chelsea, Arsenal are pursuing a deal for a new midfield signing of their own, Liverpool's Curtis Jones.

Jones has been linked with a move away from Anfield all summer, with Inter Milan reportedly the frontrunners for his signature. However, according to Calciomercato, Arsenal have now entered the race.

The online publication is reporting that Inter Milan are unwilling to match Liverpool's €40M valuation of the player, and will not go beyond a €25M offer. This has opened the door to other clubs, such as Arsenal, to swoop in for Jones.

Mikel Arteta is a fan of the player, and the Gunners believe they can secure a discounted deal for a player who has only one year left on his contract at Anfield.
