Recently promoted Kosovo will welcome the Republic of Ireland to Fadil Vokrri Stadium on Thursday night as both sides kick off their 2026-27 UEFA Nations League campaigns.

Both sides return to action after failing to qualify for the World Cup, with Franco Foda's side most recently recording a 3-0 win over Andorra, while the Irish have won two and drawn two of their four friendlies since suffering penalty shootout heartbreak in Prague back in March.

10 years after their first-ever game, Kosovo are establishing themselves as a strong force and a tough side to beat in European football.

The 2024-25 Nations League saw the Dardanians drawn in Group 2 of League C alongside Romania, Cyprus and Lithuania, and after starting with a defeat, they finished second with an impressive run of four wins to close out the group phase.

12 points were enough for Foda's side to finish second and take on Iceland in the promotion/relegation play-off, which they overcame to enter the latest edition of the Nations League in League B.

More recently, Kosovo turned their attention to qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in their history and once again enjoyed success in the group stages, finishing second in a group containing Switzerland, Slovenia and Sweden.

However, there was no playoff joy for the landlocked nation as they were defeated 1-0 by Turkey, denying them a trip to North America by the narrowest of margins and seeing them fall at the same stage as their upcoming opponents.

As for the visiting side, Heimir Hallgrimsson's Republic of Ireland travel to southeast Europe for the first of a gruelling 12-day, four-match schedule, with the toughest test potentially coming first.

Like Kosovo, they were unable to make it to the World Cup after coming heartbreakingly close to booking their spot, losing a penalty shootout to the Czech Republic after going 2-0 up inside the opening 25 minutes.

The fact that the Boys in Green even had a chance to qualify through the playoffs was dramatic in itself, with Ireland losing their opening two group games and then needing results against Portugal and Hungary to progress.

The latter of those games came in Budapest, where their journey had seemingly come to an end before half-time after going into the break 2-0 down.

However, the Irish fought back in dramatic style thanks to a Troy Parrott hat-trick, with his winner coming in the 96th minute to set up a clash with the Czech Republic.

While the shootout defeat they later endured would have hurt, Ireland had played well to establish a 2-0 lead, and their response in their most recent outings has been strong.

Hallgrimsson's men drew 0-0 with North Macedonia before smashing Grenada 5-0, with Jack Moylan netting three times on his debut, then recorded another win in Dublin against Qatar before drawing 1-1 with Canada in North America.

While there is not a lot of noise surrounding this particular game, there is plenty surrounding their second and fourth matches of the international break against Israel.

The two games will be played away from both sides' home grounds, with the first taking place in Hungary and the second in the small Serbian town of Backa Topola.

The fixtures come amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with the FAI having previously expressed its concern over the suffering and devastation being endured by civilians there and backed a motion calling for the Israel Football Association's suspension from UEFA competitions.

For now, the Boys in Green will turn their attention to a tough opening Nations League game, where they will look to continue their impressive form against a team they have never played against.

While Thursday night offers a tough test on the road for the Irish, they are favourites to win and are currently priced at 21/10 to do so.

We see Ireland overcoming their upcoming opponents in a closely fought affair, with our current scoreline prediction of 1-2 coming in at 11/1, while Over 2.5 goals is priced at 13/10.
