Koln started the season in excellent fashion, winning 2-1 against Wurzburger Kickers in the DFB-Pokal before beating Hoffenheim 3-2 on August 29 in their opening Bundesliga game of 2026-27.

However, they then suffered a 4-1 loss to Stuttgart on September 4 in their second league match of the campaign, a damaging and demoralising result.

If there was a saving grace, it would be that few expected Rene Wagner's side to claim three points from six against Hoffenheim and Stuttgart, two teams that finished fifth and fourth respectively in the Bundesliga in 2025-26.

The hosts know they will be without centre-back Timo Hubers due to a knee injury, so expect to see a paring of Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Luka Lochoshvili in the middle of a four-man defence.

Bremen suffered a defeat in matchday one, losing 4-1 against Freiburg on August 30, but they responded with an emphatic 3-1 success against RB Leipzig on September 5.

A win on Saturday could be vital to both teams' chances of survival given both finished in the bottom five last season and are likely to be involved near the foot of the table again.

Victory for boss Daniel Thioune would represent his side's first in three meetings with Koln, with the Green-Whites having lost one and drawn one of their two league encounters in 2025-26.

Werder Bremen could be without midfielder Senne Lynen, whose absence would be a significant blow due to the fact Jens Stage has already been ruled out.

There could be value in predicting Said El Mala to Score at 8/5 (2.6) considering he has scored three times in his last four Bundesliga games.
