Whisper+ analysis

Authenticity (3.5/5): Widely reported news provides some confidence

CaughtOffside have claimed that a source at Real Madrid has informed them that Los Blancos have added highly-rated Jarrad Branthwaite to their list of potential transfer targets as they look to strengthen at centre-back.

The same source names Cristian Romero as the first name on that list, which has been widely reported elsewhere, giving little reason to doubt that the Evertonian isn't next in line.

Value (3/5): Everton looking to squeeze every penny

Real Madrid risk a bidding war if they want to bring the 22-year-old to the Spanish capital. Valued at €42 million by Transfermarkt, Branthwaite was subject of a £50 million bid in the summer from Man Utd, which Everton rejected.

No bid from Real has been mentioned, though it is claimed that Everton want at least £75 million for the player who is under contract until June 2027.

Suitability (4.5/5): Branthwaite possesses all the right attributes

Branthwaite returned to the Everton starting line-up at the weekend having worked his way back from groin surgery, and looked a class act as the Toffees secured a clean sheet against West Ham.

Tall, physical, an excellent reader of the game and confident on the ball, he has all the hallmarks of a top central defender who looks experienced well beyond his years. And it is only that small question mark over his potential longevity that prevents a 5/5 rating!

Upgrade? (3.5/5): Real's injury crisis needs a quick fix

On paper, it looks tough for Branthwaite to replace the likes of Rudiger, Alaba and Eder Militao, especially if he were to sign in January. Yet, with Real's injury crisis – with Militao the latest to be stretchered off – Branthwaite could well have a starting place secured come February.

That could be a lot to put on the youngster's shoulders, so its perhaps no surprise that Romero is above him in the pecking order.

Logic (2.5/5): A real 50/50 move for the Englishman

Englishmen have a mixed record as Real Madrid players – from Jude Bellingham at one end of the spectrum to Jonathan Woodgate at the other. However, a move to the Bernabeu will always be hard to turn down.

Branthwaite will be hoping that former Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has done his homework and has a real plan for him, rather than just wanting a short-term replacement for injured players. Either way, it's a risk.

Whisper+ verdict: 17/25

Real Madrid may be put off by the high price tag, especially for a player who is not their first choice.

At this stage, Real look more likely to sign Romero, who will command a smaller fee and provide more experience without a language barrier. A move in the summer for Branthwaite is more plausible, yet with Man Utd still interested, Los Blancos may miss their chance.
