Ivory Coast vs Cameroon predictions: Low-scoring affair

Key stats

  • Fewer than three goals were scored in 10 of Ivory Coast's last 12 matches across all competitions.
  • Cameroon's last five games went below the 2.5-goal line.
  • Ivory Coast opened the scoring in four of their last five matches.

Correct score prediction: Ivory Coast 1-0 Cameroon

Not only are Ivory Coast unbeaten in their last eight competitive games (W7, D1), but they also did not concede a single goal in that stretch. The Elephants have also held their own against Cameroon in recent years, winning three of the last four clashes between these sides.

Keeping in mind that Cameroon won only one of their last three matches, scoring only once in that stretch, we are leaning toward Ivory Coast for the win.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Ivory Coast priced as favourites

  • HOME: 11/10 (2.10) – 47.6%
  • DRAW: 11/5 (3.20) – 31.3%
  • AWAY: 27/10 (3.70) – 27%

Ivory Coast kicked off their AFCON title defence with a 1-0 victory over Mozambique. The Elephants will look to secure one of the top two spots this time after they barely advanced to the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams in the previous edition on home soil.

Similarly, Cameroon won their AFCON opener by a single goal against Gabon. The Indomitable Lions, who are five-time champions, will set their sights on earning their first Nations Cup title since 2017.

With both teams currently tied at the top of Group F with three points, the winner of this match will almost certainly secure a place in the Round of 16.

As things stand, Ivory Coast are the expected winners at 11/10 (2.10). Teams with these odds generally have a 47.6% probability of winning.

Also, bearing in mind that Ivory Coast drew first blood in four of their last five matches, Ivory Coast to score first has an appealing look at 3/4 (1.75). That one has a 57.1% chance of landing.

Most recent H2Hs: Ivory Coast have bragging rights

Ivory Coast won three of their last four clashes with Cameroon and have lost only once in their last five H2Hs (CHAN included). However, Cameroon were victorious the last time these teams clashed.

It is also important to note that these nations have squared off against each other a fair few times at the AFCON. Cameroon defeated Ivory Coast en route to their first title in 1984, while Ivory Coast had to get past Cameroon in the 1992 semifinals en route to their first continental title.

Excluding the AFCON qualifiers, this will be the ninth Ivory Coast vs Cameroon clash in the Nations Cup. The Indomitable Lions lead the H2H in this competition with five wins and three defeats.

Ivory Coast preview: No new injury concerns

The Ivorians have no health problems at the moment, aside from the fact that striker Sebastian Haller pulled out of the tournament due to injury.

Manchester United's exciting winger Amad Diallo was the hero of the team's tournament opener, scoring the only goal as the Elephants edged past Mozambique. The youngster will look to put in another top performance in this West African derby.

Predicted lineup: Fofana (GK), Doue, Kossounou, Ndicka, Konan, Kessie, Seri, Sangare, Diallo, Zaha & Diomande.

Last five matches

  • Ivory Coast 1-0 Mozambique
  • Oman 0-2 Ivory Coast
  • Saudi Arabia 1-0 Ivory Coast
  • Ivory Coast 3-0 Kenya
  • Seychelles 0-7 Ivory Coast

Cameroon preview: No Baleba, no problem?

As for Cameroon, the loss of holding midfielder Carlos Baleba to injury after the Brighton man was forced off against Gabon in their AFCON opener is undoubtedly a big blow so early in the tournament. However, they have a capable replacement in Jean Onana, who is eager to prove his worth as the competition progresses.

Levante star Etta Eyong made the difference for the Indomitable Lions last time out and will again start up front, while Manchester United man Bryan Mbuemo plays just closely behind.

Predicted lineup: Epassy (GK), Tolo, Kotto, Malone, Yongwa, Namaso, Onana, Ebong, Tchamadeu, Mbeumo & Eyong.

Last five matches

  • Cameroon 1-0 Gabon
  • Cameroon 0-1 DR Congo
  • Cameroon 0-0 Angola
  • Mauritius 0-2 Cameroon
  • Cape Verde 1-0 Cameroon

Amad Diallo scored Ivory Coast's only goal in their win against Mozambique earlier this week. The Manchester United forward, who found the net in his last two appearances for club and country, will fancy his chances against Cameroon.
