A run of three unbeaten games had boosted hopes of survival, but Heidenheim were dealt a huge blow by Freiburg last time out. The Breisgau-Brasilianer beat their visitors 2-1 at Europa-Park Stadion to inflict their sixth loss in 10 outings.
New Heidenheim boss Frank Schmidt has now emerged victorious in just one of 17 matches since taking charge.
However, it is on home turf where Heidenheim have won 14 of their 19 points so far this season. There is hope that they can push their survival battle to the very final round.
Five players are expected to be sidelined for the hosts: Eren Dinkci, Mikkel Kaufmann, Benedikt Gimber, Leart Paqarada and Sirlord Conteh.
St. Pauli have a handful of players missing as well. Nikola Vasilj, Eric Smith, James Sands, Mathias Pereira and Ricky Jones are doubtful to appear.
The visitors are the league’s worst performing over the last five rounds, with just two points to show for. Six successive games without a win have dulled morale in the Kiezkicker camp.
After a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich, they were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Koln.
With 26 points, they are now five below the safety spots held by four teams: Werder Bremen, Hamburg, Borussia Monchengladbach and Koln.

Whispers Predicts: Heidenheim 2-2 St. Pauli
Heidenheim’s matches have begun frantically over the past few months - five of their last eight games produced over 1.5 first-half goals. Backing Over 1.5 first-half goals at 17/10 is a bet worth your attention.
Both sides have struggled to find consistency this season. A Draw at 9/4 offers clear value in a game where the two teams are obliged to fight for every ball.
Heidenheim have scored in four of their last five matches, while St. Pauli have done so three times in that same time span. The hosts are clearly at an advantage given their relatively better form. Double chance – Heidenheim to win or draw & BTTS – Yes at 11/8 makes sense.
St. Pauli struck first against Koln last time out, as they began the game with hunger. However, with the home fans backing them, Heidenheim should draw first blood. Heidenheim to score first at 10/11 is worth a look.
> Over 1.5 first-half goals at 17/10 | Likelihood: Probable
> Draw at 9/4 | Likelihood: Probable
> Heidenheim to win or draw & BTTS – Yes at 11/8 | Likelihood: Probable
> Heidenheim to score first at 10/11 | Likelihood: Very Likely
