Away team to win or draw

Mainz 05 have been on a good run, having maintained an unbeaten streak in their last five Bundesliga away games.

Heidenheim will look to push their way into the relegation playoff in the hope of securing top-flight status when they welcome Mainz 05 to the Voith-Arena on Saturday in the Bundesliga.

This season finale sees Frank Schmidt’s men fighting for survival on home turf, while the visitors arrive with the confidence of a top-half position and extend their run on the road.

With the hosts needing a victory to potentially get into the relegation play-off spot, the atmosphere in Heidenheim will be electric for this do-or-die clash.

Two sides with very different ambitions meet on the final day of the Bundesliga season as Heidenheim chase an incredible survival escape while Mainz aim to finish best of the rest outside the European places.

Heidenheim begin the round in 17th place but are only behind Wolfsburg on goal difference after a vital 3-1 victory away at Cologne last weekend.

Their revival has been remarkable considering they were ten points adrift of the relegation play-off spot back in mid-March, yet a strong run of form since then has given them genuine hope of survival.

Schmidt’s side have also looked far more dangerous in attack recently, scoring at least twice in each of their last three matches, including an eye-catching 3-3 draw away to champions Bayern Munich.

Mainz, meanwhile, have little left to fight for beyond securing a respectable top-half finish as the season closes.

European commitments have taken their toll in recent months, with Urs Fischer’s men winning just one of their last six competitive matches.

They can no longer catch ninth-placed FC Augsburg, but could still slip as low as 13th if results go against them.

Even so, they have performed consistently well against the Bundesliga’s struggling sides this season, remaining unbeaten against the current bottom four, which should give them confidence heading into this encounter.

Whispers predicts: Heidenheim 1-2 Mainz 05

Heidenheim’s recent form includes a vital win over Cologne, but their season-long defensive struggles suggest they will find it hard to keep the visitors out.

Mainz 05 have been the more consistent side and have already beaten Heidenheim twice in their last two meetings.

With this, the bookmakers have made the home side slight favourites at 1.90 odds, and a draw is currently valued at 4.50.

An away victory for Mainz 05 is priced at 3.20, making them the underdogs heading into this final game of the season clash.

The odds for over 2.5 goals are set at 1.44, and a first-half total goals (over 0.5) is given at 1.22 odds.

Both teams to score (yes) is also a compelling pick at 1.44, and an away double chance is given at 1.90 odds.
