Feyenoord’s start to life under Giovanni van Bronckhorst had been largely smooth until recently, with Tuesday’s defeat to Inter Milan marking their heaviest loss under the new manager so far and extending their winless run to four matches.

Having failed to score in two of their last four matches, De Stadionclub have struggled in attack of late, quite a contrast from the 21 goals they netted during a five-match winning streak prior to this slump.

Leading the league in away points this season, Feyenoord are one of three teams, alongside Ajax and Fortuna Sittard, still unbeaten on the road, giving them reason for optimism this weekend despite their current rough patch.

With all other top-four teams not in action until after their trip to Heerenveen, Sunday’s visitors have an opportunity to pile pressure on the chasing pack and reaffirm their title ambitions.

Despite contending with several defensive absentees – notably Jordan Bos, Gijs Smal, and Bart Nieuwkoop – Feyenoord still boast the division’s second-best defensive record (12 goals conceded), with only one team having kept more than their four clean sheets.

That side is Heerenveen, who have recorded five Eredivisie clean sheets – most recently in a 1-0 win over NEC Nijmegen, where Dylan Vente’s goal midway through the second half proved decisive.

Robin Veldman’s men continue to string together impressive results and head into this weekend’s clash as arguably the league’s most in-form team, having collected a league-high 12 points over the last five gameweeks.

De Superfriezen’s 18 points from 11 matches is also their best return at this stage since 2020-21 (19 points). As a result, there is genuine optimism that this could be the year they end their 16-year wait for a return to European competition.

To bolster their chances of that happening, Heerenveen will need to up either their volume of clear-cut opportunities created or the accuracy of their finishing, with their big-chance conversion rate currently at 30.3%, which ranks 16th.

Unlike their upcoming opponents, Sunday’s hosts have no injury or suspension concerns, though an abundance of options could present a selection dilemma for Robin Veldman.

Whispers predicts: Heerenveen 1-3 Feyenoord

Having won five of their six away league games this season, Feyenoord are hard to overlook on the road, and a victory for them at 18/25 (1.72) looks the most likely outcome.

Despite Sunday’s clash featuring two of the league’s best defences, both teams to score – Yes at 2/5 (1.40) is expected to land.

Anis Hadj Moussa has contributed to a league goal every 111 minutes for Feyenoord this term, and backing him at 7/10 (1.70) to score or assist could prove rewarding.
