Hearts will take on Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Monday, 4 August, as the opening weekend of fixtures comes to a close.
Both teams will have watched how everyone else in the division has got on this weekend and will now be itching to take to the field at Tynecastle.
Last season, Aberdeen picked up one more point than Hearts over the 38 games, which makes this a tough match to call.

Hearts vs Aberdeen prediction: The hosts to pick up all three points
Key Stats
- Hearts ended last season on a run of four league wins in a row.
- Aberdeen ended last season on a run of four league defeats in a row.
- Hearts haven't conceded a goal in any of their last four matches.
Correct score prediction: Hearts 2-0 Aberdeen
Hearts have been excellent over the summer months, and while they haven't earned any points for their efforts, the habit of winning is there. Aberdeen, on the other hand, could be caught off guard as they have only played two pre-season matches in preparation for the new campaign.
Pre-game odds and win probability: A close match to call
- HOME: 21/20 (2.05) – 48.8%
- DRAW: 13/5 (3.60) – 27.8%
- AWAY: 23/10 (3.30) – 30.3%
*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change
The Hearts vs Aberdeen odds paint a good picture of how evenly matched these two teams have been in recent seasons, but I feel they are slightly misaligned given the current state of the two teams. Ladbrokes have only made Hearts the narrow favourites, giving them a 48.8% chance of winning the match, while Aberdeen have been given a 30.3% chance of victory.

Most recent H2Hs: Plenty of tight matches
Further evidence of how closely matched these two teams are can be found by analysing the recent Hearts vs Aberdeen H2H record. Three of the last five matches have finished level after 90 minutes, with each team picking up a win apiece across the other two matches. The most recent encounter was in the Scottish Cup semi-finals, which Aberdeen won on penalties.

Hearts preview: Will Kabore's work permit arrive in time?
Despite confirming his signing a month ago, Hearts are still waiting on a work permit for new signing, Pierre Landry Kabore. Even if it does arrive in time for the match against Aberdeen, it's unlikely that the 24-year-old will play any part. Jamie McCart and Finlay Pollock are also going to miss out due to injuries.

Aberdeen preview: Injury concerns of their own
Aberdeen aren't starting the new season in an ideal way, not just because they have only played two friendlies, but also because they will potentially be without four first team players on Monday night. Kristers Tober and Emmanuel Gyamfi are both definitely out, while Ester Sokler and Sivert Heltne Nilsen are doubts.
Predicted lineup: Mitov (GK), Jensen, Dorrington, Knoester, Shinnie, Palaversa, Clarkson, Keskinen, Morris, Aouchiche, Yengi

Player to watch: Lawrence Shankland

After two consecutive seasons of scoring 24 league goals for Hearts, Lawrence Shankland had a significant dip last season, only managing eight. At the age of 29, there are now questions around whether he has already hit his peak, but he will be keen to put those questions to bed this season by returning to top form.
