Aston Villa will aim to strengthen their grip on a top-five finish when they travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Cottagers sit 12th in the table with 45 points, five adrift of Brighton & Hove Albion in sixth, although they have a game in hand, and with several teams still in contention, the race for European places remains fiercely competitive.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, are fourth and level on points with Manchester United, trailing only on goal difference, and with a healthy cushion over the chasing pack, their hopes of securing Champions League football are firmly in their own hands.

After a difficult spell in February that saw Fulham lose three consecutive matches, they have managed to steady the ship, suffering just one defeat in their last six Premier League outings to keep their faint European hopes alive.

The Cottagers, however, come into this fixture on the back of a two-game winless run, including a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, and their lack of cutting edge in attack remains a concern, having failed to score in four of their last five league matches.

Marco Silva’s side also have a poor recent record against Aston Villa at Craven Cottage, losing three of their last four meetings, and will need a strong performance to turn that trend around.

In terms of team news, Kevin Mbabu (foot) and Kenny Tete (ankle) are ruled out, while Alex Iwobi will be assessed ahead of kickoff after picking up a thigh issue in the draw with Brentford.

Aston Villa, in contrast, are firmly focused on securing a return to the Champions League and appear to have hit form at a crucial stage of the season.

The Villans are unbeaten in their last six matches across all competitions, winning five of them, although Unai Emery will be concerned by their away form, with the side winless in their last four on the road.

In fact, Villa have managed just one win in their last seven away Premier League matches, but they will take confidence from their dominant record against Fulham, having won each of their last seven meetings.

In terms of team news, Boubacar Kamara remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury, while January signing Alyssonis still struggling with fitness issues and is unlikely to feature this weekend.

Whispers Predicts: Fulham 1-2 Aston Villa

Considering Aston Villa’s dominant recent record against Fulham, it is not difficult to back the visitors for all three points, even with their inconsistent away form, and odds of 2.5 present decent value.

Fulham have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven meetings with Villa, while both teams have scored in four of their last five matches, making BTTS - Yes at 1.62 a strong option.

There have also been at least three goals in four of the last five encounters between the sides, so Over 2.5 goals at 1.77 looks like an appealing bet.

📈 Whispers' Tips

> Aston Villa to win at 2.5 | Likelihood: Probable

> Over 2.5 goals at 1.77 | Likelihood: Probable

> BTTS - Yes at 1.62 | Likelihood: Possible

> Villa to score first at 2.0| Likelihood: Possible
