With Wolfsburg in desperate need of points in their quest to achieve Bundesliga survival, their clash with hosts Freiburg at Europa-Park Stadion on Sunday could ultimately be decisive in the relegation battle.

The Wolves are second last in 17th place with just 25 points, and they are now six points and two places from automatic safety with just three games remaining, whereas Freiburg are comfortable in eighth with 43 points.

Freiburg may be on track to total fewer points than they did in 2024-25 (55), but they have had the added pressure of a Europa League campaign to deal with this term.

The hosts were beaten 2-1 by Braga in the semi-final of that competition on Thursday, though that was only the first leg and they will have the benefit of playing the second leg at home next Thursday.

Freiburg came back from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits to beat Wolfsburg 4-3 in the reverse fixture in December 2025 to pick up their third consecutive victory against the Wolves.

Considering Patrick Osterhage has been ruled out because of a knee injury - he is scheduled to return later this month - expect to see Maximilian Eggestein and Johan Manzambi start in midfield.

Wolfsburg will be thankful that 15th-placed Hamburger SV face a difficult test against seventh-placed Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend, but the visitors will themselves face champions Bayern Munich in matchweek 33.

The club's best bet will be to aim for the 16th-placed relegation playoff spot, which is currently occupied by St Pauli, who only have 26 points and will host Wolfsburg on the final day of the season.

Boss Dieter Hecking oversaw a goalless stalemate with Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend, and while his team have picked up four points from the last six on offer, they have only won once in 13 league matches.

The Wolves will be without midfielders Mattias Svanberg and Maximilian Arnold due to respective calf and groin injuries, so perhaps Vinicius Souza will play next to Christian Eriksen in a double pivot on Sunday.

Whispers predicts: Freiburg 2-1 Wolfsburg

Though Wolfsburg's form has improved slightly, it is hard to predict anything other than a home victory, with the bookmakers valuing a Freiburg win at 2.55.

As for matters on the pitch, the hosts have often scored at least two goals at home in the Bundesliga, so predicting Freiburg to Score Over 1.5 Goals - priced at 2 - would make sense.

However, Freiburg have also struggled to keep clean sheets at home, and it is no surprise that Both Teams to Score is priced at 1.55.

There could be some value in predicting a Penalty to be Awarded during the game - that prediction is valued at 3.1 - given the hosts have given away the most penalties in the Bundesliga this season.
