Fleetwood to win

Fleetwood have won two out of their three matches this season and are yet to concede a goal.

Shrewsbury Town will take on Fleetwood Town in the second round of the 2026/27 Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, in a clash between two League Two sides.

Both clubs will know that a win on Tuesday could lead to a match against Premier League opposition in the next round, meaning there is plenty of financial incentive to progress.

It has been a dismal start to the new season for Shrewsbury Town, whose supporters may now be seriously concerned about the prospect of potentially falling out of the Football League in May.

Salop were only relegated from League One two seasons ago, but after finishing 19th last season, alarm bells should have been ringing. Despite that, the club have not spent any money in the transfer window, which is certainly cause for concern.

Currently at the helm is Gavin Cowan, who has been in charge since January. After an initial ‘bounce' in February, Shrewsbury's form has nosedived, and it isn't unthinkable that the 45-year-old is replaced in the near future.

A cup run could help to breathe new life into the Shrewsbury squad, so Cowan could go with his best available XI here. That will not include Jack Price, who is out for the foreseeable with a hamstring injury.

As for Fleetwood, they will be feeling completely differently to Shrewsbury, after making a strong start to their season.

The Fishermen have won two of their three matches across all competitions, which included a 1-0 triumph over Chesterfield in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Their impressive start to the campaign has been built primarily on a strong defence; they have yet to concede a goal in any of the three matches they have played in and will be confident of retaining their record against Shrewsbury.

Manager Matt Lawlor has made several additions to his squad this summer, and he will be delighted with how many of them have fared so far. A win on Tuesday would see them reach the Carabao Cup third round for just the third time in their history.
