Who are the top five best Premier League right backs in 24/25?

The Premier League has, without doubt, the most depth of any football league in the world, and the right-back position is no exception.

The debate over the best Premier League right backs has rumbled on for years, but has reached fever pitch in recent years, such are the league's riches.

As in any top five, there are some tough decisions to be made. But read on to see why we've picked our premier quintet.

Top five best Premier League right backs in 2024/25

5. Kieran Trippier

Narrowly beating out the likes of Pedro Porro and Diogo Dalot, both of whom enjoyed strong 2023/24 campaigns is Kieran Trippier.

The Newcastle man had some struggles off the ball last season, but is still a superb player, and is the Magpies' main creative threat, and they struggle without him.

The 33-year-old ranks in the 92nd or higher percentile for assists, expected assists, shot-creating actions and progressive passes when ranked against other full-backs in Europe's top five leagues.

4. Benjamin White

For a man who wasn't even a right-back two short years ago, it is remarkable that Arsenal's Benjamin White features as highly here as he does.

Mikel Arteta has moulded the former central defender and midfielder into his model right-back.

White is incredible tactically, oscillating between playing as a third centre-back or tucking into midfield in build-up and haring upfield to support Bukayo Saka with under and overlapping runs.

He has a centre-back's solidity off the ball, and recorded a career best four goals and four assists last campaign.

3. Reece James

Despite being forever plagued by injuries, Reece James is an unbelievable right-back when fit.

James can run an entire flank on his own at his best, as he often showed in the 2021/22 season. That campaign, James scored five and assisted nine, at a rate of 0.68 goals and assists per 90 minutes.

The 24-year-old is Chelsea's captain, and the Blues will be desperate to see more of him this campaign, after just five starts last season.

James will also need to play more to keep up his reputation, and not let his performances fade into memory.

2. Kyle Walker

The most decorated player on this list, Kyle Walker is often put into all-time Premier League XIs, with his astonishing six winners' medals in seven seasons.

Walker is not as much of an attacking threat as others on this list, but is a truly special defender.

The 34-year-old is unbelievably fast, and is able to defend one-on-one with any winger around thanks to his tenacity and reading of the game.

Walker has been key to big Manchester City wins over the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool and PSG, thanks to his ability to neutralise even the most mercurial attacking talent.

1. Trent Alexander-Arnold

The final player in our all-English top five is, of course, Trent Alexander-Arnold. Though the Liverpool man is often (sometimes unfairly) criticised for his defending, his attacking performances are unprecedented.

The 25-year-old has a stunning 58 assists since he broke into the Liverpool team – the most of any Premier League defender in history, and has created more goals than the likes of Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Mesut Ozil.

But even that does not reflect the scope of Alexander-Arnold's abilities. He can score crucial goals, such as his equaliser away to Manchester City last season, and is Liverpool's chief progressor of the ball.

It would take a remarkable turn of events for the Liverpool right-back not to go down as the greatest to ever play the role in Premier League history.
