10 games into the Primeira Liga campaign, Estrela Amadora’s impressive start to the season feels like a distant memory, with a 2-1 defeat away to Moreirense last Saturday joining a trail of disappointing results.

Following an uneventful first half, summer signing Lovro Zvonarek hit back for Estrela Amadora in the 57th minute to cancel out Landerson’s 50th-minute opener, but Englishman Nile John netted in the fifth minute of stoppage time to sink the visitors.

Estrela have now lost four consecutive league games, suffering defeats against Academico Viseu, Arouca, Casa Pia and Moreirense, having gone unbeaten in the opening six games, claiming two wins and four draws.

A lack of sting at the attacking end of the pitch has accompanied this downturn, as Pepa’s men have failed to find the back of the net in three of their most recent four games, and with a third-highest 19 goals conceded already, work also needs to be done at the back if they are to turn their fortunes around.

Off the back of a 15th-placed finish last season, when they beat the drop by the skin of their teeth, Estrela have picked up 10 points from the opening 10 games this term to sit 12th in the Primeira Liga standings, level on points with 11th-placed Famalicao.

On the other hand, Benfica maintained their 100% record in the Europa League on Tuesday when they secured a 3-1 victory over Lech Poznan to remain top of the league phase standings, level on 12 points with Bournemouth and Ferencvaros.

Rafa Silva broke the deadlock just six minutes in to hand Benfica a dream start at the Estadio da Luz, with Gianluca Prestianni and Georgiy Sudakov netting on either side of Leo Bengtsson’s 72nd-minute strike to cap off a dominant team display.

While Benfica are firing on all cylinders on the continental scene, they made it three consecutive victories back home on Monday, when they edged out Alverca 1-0 at the Estadio da Luz thanks to a second-hand penalty from Vangelis Pavlidis.

Aiming to clinch their first Primeira Liga crown since 2023, Marco Silva’s men have made an promising start to the season, picking up eight wins and one draw from their 10 matches to collect 25 points and sit second in the league table, but they already find themselves trailing league leaders Porto by five points.

Benfica will be backing themselves to keep their hot streak alive this weekend, when they take on an opposing side who have failed to win any of their last 13 meetings, including 11 straight defeats since a goalless draw in May 2008.

Whispers’ prediction: Estrela Amadora 0-3 Benfica

While Estrela will look to stop the rot this weekend, they face the daunting challenge of a Benfica side currently firing on all cylinders, and given the gulf in depth and quality between the two squads, we fancy As Aguias to come away with the desired result.

Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis leads the league scoring chart with 10 goals in 10 matches, and the Greek forward scoring this weekend is currently priced at 53/100 (1.53), while over 2.5 goals sits at 11/25 (1.44).

Given Estrela’s struggles in attack, Benfica to win + BTTS – No at 6/5 (2.20) is the value bet for us, while the correct score market has a correct score of 0-3 at 15/2 (8.50).
