England vs Switzerland prediction: Bore draw in Dusseldorf
Key stats
- Our England vs Switzerland betting tips take into account there being an average of just 1.25 goals per game in regulation time in matches involving Gareth Southgate’s side at this tournament.
- Across his reign, Southgate’s side have conceded just 0.70 goals per game on average in major tournament football.
- Switzerland have drawn 9 of their last 15 internationals in a run stretching back more than a year.
Correct score prediction: England 0-0 Switzerland
England haven’t shown anything at this tournament that suggests they’re going to easily break open an organised Swiss side that is unbeaten in eight internationals this calendar year. With the stakes high, caution could prevail and we could be in for a long night in Dusseldorf.

The Euro 2020 runners up are the favourites according to the England vs Switzerland odds with an implied probability of 46.5% that they win this game to reach a third semi-final in the Southgate era.
England were seconds away from an early exit in the last round until Jude Bellingham’s goal of the tournament contender forced Extra Time against Slovakia. They went on to win 2-1 thanks to Harry Kane’s header.
It was much more impressive from the Swiss who beat Italy 2-0 thanks to strikes from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas to set up this tie.

Last five H2Hs: History favours the Three Lions
Our England vs Switzerland prediction suggests we may get a repeat of the goalless Nations League clash from 2019. Recent history does favour England who won friendlies against the Swiss in 2018 and 2022 while they also won both meetings in Euro 2016 qualifying.

England preview: Guehi suspended for last eight clash
Gareth Southgate is likely to start Ezri Konsa in central defence given Marc Guehi is suspended. The England boss has been reluctant to change his side and has Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham available here despite concerns the duo might face disciplinary action after the Slovakia win.

Switzerland preview: Xhaka passed fit
Former Arsenal man Granit Xhaka has been passed fit after an injury scare. With no other issues, Switzerland should be at full strength for this game.

Key duels
Ezri Konsa vs Breel Embolo
With Guehi out, Ezri Konsa could be in line for his first competitive start for England. The Aston Villa man averaged 1.5 tackles and 1.9 clearances per game during the 2023/24 Premier League and is likely to be in direct opposition to Breel Embolo who has scored once so far at this tournament.
Declan Rice vs Granit Xhaka
Declan Rice was largely seen as the replacement for Granit Xhaka at Arsenal last summer but they’ll be direct rivals on Saturday. Of the two, Rice has completed a higher percentage of his passes (91.8%) at Euro 2024, but Xhaka averages 2.0 key passes per game to the Englishman’s 0.8.
Harry Kane vs Manuel Akanji
With Switzerland likely to set up with a back three, Manuel Akanji could be tasked with marking England striker Harry Kane for much of this game. The Three Lions skipper has scored half of his team’s goals at this tournament and averages 3.3 shots per game.
Player to watch – Jude Bellingham
With things still not convincing from a collective point of view, England’s best shot at going all the way in Germany may rest on key man Jude Bellingham producing more moments of individual brilliance. The 21 year old has scored twice so far at Euro 2024, taking his international goal tally to five.
Bellingham’s late interventions
The midfielder struck in the 95th minute to break Slovakian hearts last weekend and he’s been doing things like that all season for Real Madrid. He scored four times after the 90th minute for Los Blancos this term, including some dramatic late winners.
Winner’s next potential opponents
England or Switzerland, whoever wins this match, will go into the EURO 2024 semi-final, where they will either meet with the Netherlands or Turkey.
When it comes to England, they would certainly prefer Turkey since they've never lost to this team and so far they've notched nine wins and two draws. Meanwhile, the situation is much closer with the Netherlands and England actually have a losing H2H record against the Dutch, although not by a lot: 6-9-7.
On the other hand, Switzerland surprisingly have a good record against the Netherlands since the two teams are currently tied with 15 wins each, along with three draws. However, Switzerland haven't done as well against Turkey in the past, with a record of five wins, three draws, and eight losses.
In any case, if any of these two teams can reach the final, they will meet with one Spain or France/Portugal.
Predictions from other FW contributors
Zack TC: England 0-1 Switzerland
It's hard to trust Southgate. In a very arrogant fashion, he made only 2 subs before the 90-minute mark in the Slovakia game and is lucky to be here in the first place. With his game-management skills in question and his obvious struggles to come up with a midfield composition that works well, it seems the only logical outcome is a loss to a well-gelled team in the likes of Switzerland.
William Evans: England 2-1 Switzerland
England have looked one-paced and poorly balanced for most of Euro 2024, scraping past sides far less well-resourced than themselves. They will need to roll the dice against a very competitive Swiss side. If reports are to be believed, Gareth Southgate is returning to the back-three system. While imperfect, particularly in its use of Bukayo Saka, this setup would move England’s players into a better balanced configuration and should allow the Three Lions a narrow victory.
Andy Delaney: England 0-2 Switzerland
Gareth Southgate’s expected change in formation smacks of desperation and is further evidence that he has come into the tournament with a squad he can’t manage. In contrast, the Swiss are a well-oiled machine and they were brilliant against Italy last time out.
Adam Clancy: England 2-1 Switzerland
England look like they’ll try a new three-at-the-back system against Switzerland, which would match their opponent’s preferred formation and could help to get the best out of their players. The Swiss play very well as a team, but England’s individual quality could make the difference once again.
