Crystal Palace’s worst Premier League signings of all time

Though Crystal Palace have made a number of impressive signings during the Premier League era, they have also made a number of additions that fans would rather forget.

Here, FootballWhispers counts down Crystal Palace's five worst signings of the Premier League era.

5) Zeki Fryers

To start the list, Zeki Fryers is named at number five, as while the defender did have a successful career in lower leagues, he made next to no impact at the Eagles.

Signed from Tottenham Hotspur in 2014 for £3m, the full-back made just 14 appearances for the club before leaving in 2017 to join Barnsley.

Fryers only made nine Premier League appearances for Palace, scoring no goals while also failing to produce an assist.

Though £3m is by no means a significant investment given the riches of Premier League teams, his time with the Londoners was still immensely disappointing.

4) Jaroslaw Jach

Next up on the list, Jaroslaw Jach comes in at number five despite never playing a game for Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

The centre-back was signed for £2m in January 2018 from Zaglebie Lubin, and he in fact made just one appearance for the club, which came in the EFL Cup against Bournemouth in 2020.

Jach would go on loan twice, before he eventually rejoined Zaglebie Lubin in June 2022.

While the fee was modest, Jach's transfer was effectively meaningless for Palace, and he made no impact in England.

3) Connor Wickham

It might seem harsh to place Connor Wickham third in this list, but the striker comes is placed here due to the fact Palace paid £9m for his services in August 2015 from Sunderland.

The striker had scored 10 league goals in the two seasons prior to joining the Eagles, but he netted just eight times in the Premier League for Palace.

In fact, he only found the back of the net 11 times in 50 appearances during his spell at Selhurst Park.

Wickham eventually left Palace for Preston North End in 2021, joining as a free agent after a six-year stay at the Eagles.

2) Alexander Sorloth

Alexander Sorloth comes in at number two on the list, with the striker leaving Crystal Palace in 2020 for RB Leipzig, just two years after joining.

The forward was signed from Midtjylland in the winter of 2018 for £9m, and he arrived having scored 15 goals in 26 games.

However, Sorloth would only make 20 appearances for Palace, scoring just one goal, which came in the EFL Cup.

Expectations were high for Sorloth, so the fact that he looked so out of place in the Premier League is why he is so low on this list.

Crystal Palace's worst Premier League signing of all time: Jordon Mutch

£4.75m

Number one on the list unfortunately belongs to Jordon Mutch, who was signed by Palace in January 2015 for a fee of roughly £4.75m from Queens Park Rangers, and the midfielder initially agreed to a four-and-a-half year contract.

Mutch joined Reading in on loan in January 2017, and he was then sent out on loan to Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps FC in March 2018, but they chose not to take up their option to buy.

After 40 appearances and zero goals, the Englishman's contract was terminated by mutual consent in January 2019 despite the fact he still had six months remaining on his deal.

While the fee was relatively modest, Crystal Palace were hoping for better from Mutch, especially as the club were looking to establish themselves in the Premier League.
