Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (3.5/5): Chelsea reignite Kounde interest
Chelsea have rekindled their interest in Barcelona's Kounde after they previously failed in their attempt to sign him from Sevilla in 2022, losing out to the Catalan giants in the race for his signature.
According to Sport, the Blues are considering Kounde and Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen as their main two centre-back targets for the summer transfer window.
Value (2.5/5): Chelsea willing to splash the cash
Barcelona spent over €50m (£41.8m) to recruit Kounde three years ago. The Blaugrana are keen to keep the France international, meaning it would take a significant offer to get them to come to the negotiating table.
However, there is a belief that Chelsea are willing to splash out on a new centre-back ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Suitability (3.5/5): Established defender
Kounde has developed a reputation as one of Europe's best defenders during his time at Barcelona. The 26-year-old was utilised as a centre-back and on the right side of defence during Xavi's tenure.
However, he has been used solely as a right-back by current Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick. Kounde's versatility makes him an appealing option for Chelsea, although they would look to use him as a central defender.
Upgrade? (4/5): Colwill partner
Levi Colwill seems to be Enzo Maresca's first-choice to play as a left centre-back, but his defensive partner has often changed this season.
Maresca's current options include Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah and Benoit Badiashile. However, Kounde would surely jump the queue to operate in central defence alongside Colwill
Logic (1.5/5): Happy at Barcelona
Kounde does not appear to be planning on leaving Barcelona anytime soon. The Frenchman is happy at the club and is keen to stay for many years to come. The two parties are in negotiations over extending his contract, which currently runs until the summer of 2027.
Whisper+ verdict: 15/25
Chelsea can offer Kounde a bigger salary and the opportunity to play centre-back. However, it is unlikely to be enough to persuade Kounde to leave Barcelona, with the defender planning to stay with the Catalan giants for the long term.
