Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (2.5/5): Unnamed source gives doubt
French one-cap wonder Castello Lukeba is being tracked by Manchester City, as the Premier League champions look at defensive options to cover their injury-prone first-team regulars.
This news comes from an exclusive report on footballtransfers.com, who have given next to no information about their source, casting doubt on the rumours.
Value (2/5): High release clause for young defender
Joining from Lyon in 2023, Lukeba is currently under contract at Leipzig until 2029, with his release clause currently at €90 million, though that will drop to €65 million in 2026.
His value is rising, but according to Transfermarkt, he is worth €40 million at present. He looks to have a big future ahead of him, but City paying €50 million above valuation for a back-up looks like bad business.
Suitability (4/5): Every bit the modern Pep defender
Most comfortable at centre-back, the 1.84m youngster also has plenty of experience at left-back.
This makes him suitable for a Pep Guardiola defence, as the legendary manager favours defenders who can play centrally and out wide. One for the future, for now he can play as a back-up to Josko Gvardiol.
Upgrade? (2/5): Able to provide good cover
With all this talk of being a back-up and “one for the future”, it seems clear that Lukeba is not an upgrade on the current stable of defenders at City.
However, with over 100 senior appearances to his name, and City players dropping like flies, he will be ready to slot into the team when called upon this season.
Logic (4/5): Castello looks ready for the challenge
Lukeba moved away from his hometown club to make a name for himself in a new league aged 20, and having won his first cap for France, he should have no qualms over making another step up on his journey to the top, even to a club of Man City's size.
The chance to work with Pep, who has just agreed a contract extension at the Etihad, will also help City's case.
Whisper+ verdict: 14.5/25
The signing of Lukeba will not dramatically transform City's season, but he is the right kind of player that can bolster Guardiola's side.
However, if Leipzig are intent on getting €90 million for him, City will be better off exploring other avenues in January.
