Although Burnley's relegation to the Championship wasn't confirmed until the end of April, the Clarets have likely been preparing for the Championship since last Christmas, such was their insipid showing in the top flight.
Burnley's lack of quality and fight resulted in the club parting ways with Scott Parker once relegation was confirmed, and the man tasked with getting the Clarets back into the Premier League is Nicky Hayen.
The Belgian, who has joined from Genk, has not enjoyed a great pre-season with his new players. Burnley failed to win any of their pre-season friendlies, and they needed penalties to overcome Notts County in the Carabao Cup first round.
Burnley have been relatively quiet in the transfer market but have confirmed a season-long loan deal for Manchester City's Max Alleyne in the build-up to this fixture. Alleyne is unlikely to play this weekend, but fellow new signing Ugo Raghouber is expected to start in midfield.
In terms of outgoings, the Clarets have lost real quality in Maxime Esteve and Jaidon Anthony.
As for West Ham, they put up a better fight than Burnley to avoid the drop last season, but ultimately still suffered the same fate on the final day of the season.
Despite failing to keep the club in the Premier League, Nuno Espirito Santo has been kept on as West Ham boss, but it is very much a case of promotion or bust for the former Wolves and Tottenham boss.
As expected, the Hammers have struggled to hold on to their best players over the summer, with Mateus Fernandes joining Tottenham and Crysencio Summerville joining Al-Hilal. Most crucially, though, they have kept hold of Jarrod Bowen, who has committed to staying at the London Stadium for at least one more season.
For the match against Burnley, Espirito Santo has a healthy squad available, but he is unlikely to play El Hadji Malick Diouf, who is being linked with a move to Brentford.
