Burnley vs Portsmouth prediction
🔥 Our Hot tip

Burnley to win (-1 handicap)

Two of Burnley's three wins this season have come by a margin of two or more goals.

Burnley are set to take on Portsmouth in the Championship on Saturday, 21 September in a match that already feels important for both ends of the league table.

The hosts are back on track after a brilliant away win at Elland Road last weekend and will be now eyeing up a return to the top two with a win here.

The visitors, meanwhile, are yet to win a match this season and are finding it tough on their return to the Championship. Can they spring a shock and win their first match of the season at Turf Moor?

As part of our latest round of Championship betting tips, here is our Burnley vs Portsmouth prediction.

Burnley vs Portsmouth prediction: The hosts to pile on Pompey misery

Key Stats

  • Burnley are unbeaten at home this season.
  • Portsmouth have lost their last two matches by a margin of two goals or more.
  • A total of ten goals have been scored across Portsmouth's two league away fixtures this season.

Correct score prediction: Burnley 3-1 Portsmouth

Burnley have looked good in the majority games they have played this season and have already scored three goals on two occasions. Portsmouth have looked better away from home than they have at Fratton Park and have scored five goals on the road so far, so a blank for them would be unusual.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Burnley start as heavy favourites

  • HOME: 10/21 (1.48) – 67.7%
  • DRAW: 17/5 (4.40) – 22.7%
  • AWAY: 5/1 (6.00) – 16.7%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

Burnley are among the favourites to secure promotion to the Premier League this season so it's no surprise that they start this match as the odds-on favourites. Ladbrokes have given the hosts a 67.% chance of coming out on top and Portsmouth just a 16.7% chance of taking home the three points.

Most recent H2Hs: A first meeting in 12 years

This is the first time that the two teams have met since 2012, two years after both teams were relegated together from the Premier League. The H2H record over the last five matches is neck and neck with Burnley winning two, Portsmouth winning two and one ending in a draw.

Interstingly, Portsmouth did win 1-0 on their last visit to Turf Moor which could be a good omen ahead of Saturday.

Burnley preview: Over an early blip

Despite only being five games into the new season, Burnley's season already feels like a roller coaster. They came flying out the blocks with two big wins then went winless over their next two matches amid rumours that Scott Parker was ready to quit over transfer window chaos. They've now seemingly come out of the other end and are ready to tackle the rest of the season head on.

Predicted lineup: Tafford (GK), Pires, Worrall, Esteve, Egan, Lauren, Brownhill, Koleosho, Mejbri, Anthony, Flemming

Portsmouth preview: Struggling with the level

Portsmouth are struggling with the jump up in level so far following their promotion campaign last season. Scoring goals hasn't been too much of an issue but keeping them out has been a real problem. If they are to beat the drop, they are going to need to tighten things up at the back.

Predicted lineup: Norris (GK), Swanson, Williams, McIntyre, Ogilvie, Dozzell, Pack, Lane, Lang, Murphy, Saydee

Player to watch: Luca Koleosho

Luca Koleosho showed flashes of his talent during Burnley's year in the Premier League last season but there is more expected from him this time around given that the level of quality in the opposition has gone down.

The Italian winger has scored twice already in the Championship this season with his latest strike against Leeds a very early contender for goal of the season. He will be Burnley's go-to man on Saturday as the Clarets look to move higher up the league table.
