Penarol vs Botafogo prediction: Penarol to get a Pyrrhic victory

Key stats

  • Penarol have gone under 2.5 total goals in five of their last seven matches.
  • Before their lost to Botafogo last week, Penarol were on a three-game winning streak.
  • Penarol are undefeated at home in Copa Libertadores this season, notching four wins and one draw so far.

Correct score prediction: Penarol 1-0 Botafogo

After losing 5-0 in the first leg, Penarol indeed need a miracle to make it to the Copa Libertadores final, but given their good results at home in the competition this season, we can see them getting a win to close things out, most likely a minimal win.

  • HOME: 7/5 (2.40) – 41.70%
  • DRAW: 2/1 (3.00) – 33.30%
  • AWAY: 17/10 (2.70) – 37.00%

We can see from the Penarol vs Botafogo odds that the hosts are the expected winners, but only by a small margin, which is understandable looking at the result from the first leg.

Still, Penarol are a good team, especially at home, and while their chances of actually making this tie competitive are slim, they certainly have a good chance of getting the win.

Penarol preview: Hoping for a miracle

After finishing top of the table this season in Torneo Apertura and Torneo Intermedio (lost the final to Nacional on penalties), Penarol are currently sitting at the top of Torneo Clausura as well, so they're having a great season in their domestic championship.

Of course, even more impressive is their run in Copa Libertadores, even if it ends in the semi-finals, as it seems likely after going down 5-0 to Botafogo in Brazil.

Botafogo preview: Keeping the dream alive

After last season's heartbreak when they lost the title in Serie A in the final rounds despite having a huge point advantage, Botafogo came out even stronger this season and they are currently first in the standings, although it is a close race since they're just three points ahead of Palmeiras, with seven games left to be played.

On top of that, Botafogo will most likely be in the final of Copa Libertadores, so they will be just a few steps away from winning a double, which would certainly be a memorable season for a team that never won Copa Libertadores and has last won a domestic title in 1995.

Meanwhile, Rafael and Jeffinho, and Junior Santos are out with injuries.

Predicted lineup: John (GK), Vitinho, Bastos, Barboza, Telles, Gregore, Freitas, Martins, Savarino, Almada & Jesus

Player to watch: Maximiliano Silvera

One of the key reasons for Penarol's success in Copa Libertadores this season is Silvera, who has six goals in this competition and if Penarol are to mount any sort of challenge against Botafogo, Silvera will have to lead the way.
