Benfica were on the losing end of a Primeira Liga game for the first time since January 2025 just before the international break when they fell to a 3-1 derby defeat against rivals Porto at the Estadio do Dragao on September 20.
In a game where Clement Lenglet received his marching orders, Alexander Bah netted in the 51st minute to cancel out Gabri Veiga’s first-half opener, but Victor Froholdt and summer signing Hwang In-beom scored in a six-minute spell to hand Porto a huge O Classico victory and preserve their 100% league record.
The result was a particularly bitter pill to swallow for Benfica, who had gone 55 consecutive Primeira Liga matches without defeat — picking up 40 wins and 15 draws — just one game shy of equaling a 47-year club record unbeaten league streak set between 1976 and 1979.
Off the back of a third-placed finish last season, Marco Silva’s men have picked up five wins and one draw from their first seven Primeira Liga matches to collect 16 points and sit second in the league standings, five points behind first-placed Porto.
Benfica will be backing themselves to bounce back this weekend against an opposing side who have failed to win any of their last 33 meetings, losing 27 and claiming six draws since a 2-1 victory in May 2013.
On the other hand, Vitoria Guimaraes picked up a timely boost on September 25 when they secured a 1-0 victory over Chaves in a friendly matchup at the Estadio Municipal Eng. Manuel Branco Teixeira thanks to an 83rd-minute strike from Victor Andersson.
Prior to that, Os Vimaranenses saw their winless run in the league extend to four games just before the international break when they needed a 96th-minute equaliser from Toni Borevkovic to salvage a 1-1 draw against Moreirense at the Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques.
Head coach Tiago Margarido will hope the friendly result over Chaves can inspire an upturn in form in the Primeira Liga, where Vitoria Guimaraes have stumbled into the new campaign, claiming just one win from their opening seven matches.
However, results on the road offer little room for optimism, with Guimaraes losing each of their last five league games on the road while managing just one win from their 11 matches since claiming a 2-1 victory over Sporting CP in the Taca da Liga back on January 6.

Whispers’ prediction: Benfica 2-0 Vitoria Guimaraes
At 19/100 (1.19), Benfica are heavily backed to come out on top this weekend, and given the gulf in quality and depth between the two sides, we are siding with the bookmakers here.
Benfica have led at half time in five of their last seven matches against Guimaraes and HT/FT 1/1 at 33/50 (1.66) is a tempting pick, while a 2-4 goal range is currently priced at 57/100 (1.57).
Guimaraes are without a goal in their last four games against As Aguias, and Benfica to win + BTTS – No at 1/1 (2.00) offers value, while a correct score of 2-0 at 6/1 (7.00) is our outside pick.
> Benfica to win + BTTS – No at 1/1 (2.00) | Likelihood: Possible
> Goal range – 2-4 goals at 57/100 (1.57) | Likelihood: Possible
> Correct score: 2-0 at 6/1 (7.00) | Likelihood: Outsider
