Sporting Lisbon preview: No Gyokeres, no problem?
Sporting CP will begin life without star man Viktor Gyokeres, who made a big-money move to Arsenal this summer. Still riding on the success of last season, the Lions will have a tough time replacing the Swede, whose goals and overall play contributed significantly to their success last campaign.
However, Sporting have made forays into the market, bringing in Luis Javier Suarez, Joao Virginia, Giorgi Kochorashvili, Rui Silva and Alisson Santos to Jose Alvalade this window, but only time will tell how much impact these signings will make in the goals department.
With the Super Cup up for grabs, the Lions will be riding on their luck over Benfica in recent months, after snatching both the Portuguese league and Cup from them last season.
Central midfielders Daniel Braganca and Joao Simoes have cruciate ligament and metatarsal fracture injuries respectively, ruling them out of this encounter.
Coach Rui Borges will have to decide which goalkeeper to start. Summer signing Joao Virginia and Rui Silva, who returned from loan last month, each made one start in the team’s last two friendlies.
Predicted lineup: Virginia (GK), Fresneda, Ignacio, Diomande, Catamo, Morita, Hjulmand, Reis, Trincao, Harder & Goncalves.

Benfica preview: Injury woes continue
Benfica have held their own in regulation time in their three most recent battles with eternal rivals Sporting. They will have vengeance in mind after losing the Portuguese Cup from a winning position a little over two months ago. Success in this first trophy on offer could define a good campaign ahead for the club.
Looking to regain supremacy over Sporting CP, the Eagles have strengthened their ranks off the proceeds from the sale of Alvaro Carreras, Joao Moutinho and Casper Tengstedt, as they acquired Richard Rios, Enzo Barrenechea, Amar Dedic, Samuel Dahl and Rafael Obrador this summer.
While things have gone well in the transfer window, the injury front continues to bite the Estadio da Luz outfit. Winger Gouveia Bruma is set to face a long time on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the friendly win against Fenerbahce last Saturday. This adds another layer of concern to the team's injury woes, as holding midfielder Manu Silva and right-back Alexander Bah are still nursing cruciate ligament tears sustained last season.
Ever-present Anatoliy Trubin is set to begin in goal. Antonio Silva and Nicolas Otamendi will most likely start at the heart of the defence, while Kerem Akturkoglu and Vangelis Pavlidis unleash the attacking threats.
Predicted lineup: Trubin (GK), Dedic, Silva, Otamendi, Dahl, Rios, Aursnes, Barrenechea, Kokcu, Akturkoglu & Pavlidis.

Player to watch: Luis Javier Suarez

Sporting Lisbon signed Luis Javier Suarez from Almeria a couple of days ago as a replacement for Viktor Gyokeres. The 27-year-old had 35 direct goal involvements in 41 league assignments and was the top scorer in La Liga 2 last season. Should he make his debut for Sporting on Thursday night, it will be interesting to see how Suarez fares against Benfica.
