Belarus finally got off the mark in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday when they cruised to a 4-0 victory over whipping boys San Marino at the Illovszky Rudolf Stadion in Budapest, Hungary.
While Belarus dominated proceedings, San Marino failed to make the most of a number of clear-cut chances, with second-half strikes from Artem Shumanskiy, Max Ebong and a brace from Artem Kontsevoy firing the White Wings to a commanding win.
This was a timely boost for Viktor Goncharenko’s men, who had stumbled into the new campaign, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Albania at Arena Kombetare in the Group C1 curtain-raiser on September 26, three days before playing out a goalless draw with Finland in September’s reverse fixture at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
The result against San Marino also saw Belarus snap an unwanted streak of 12 straight competitive matches without a win, a run which saw them miss out on qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after finishing rock-bottom in Group C of the qualifiers with just two points from six matches.
Goncharenko will hope the weekend victory can serve as a catalyst for a strong run of form in the second half of the group phase as Belarus aim to secure a first-ever promotion into the Nations League second tier, having moved up from League D in 2020.
Having dropped from League B in 2024, Finland are on course to gain promotion into the second tier at the first time of asking, as they sit top of the Group C1 standings with seven points from three matches, one point above second-placed Albania and three above Tuesday’s hosts.
Having lost each of their six matches in the 2024-25 campaign to finish rock-bottom in Group B2, Finland came out guns blazing in the new season, claiming an emphatic 7-0 victory over San Marino in the group opener on September 26 before the goalless draw against Belarus in Helsinki.
Jacob Friis’s men turned in a resilient team display to return to winning ways on Saturday when they fought back from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Albania, with Leo Walta netting a brace to cancel out Rey Manaj’s fourth-minute opener and turn the game on its head.
With Albania taking on a much-weaker San Marino side in the other group fixture on Tuesday, maximum points will be the goal for the Eagle-owls at the Illovszky Rudolf Stadion as they look to remain in pole position in the group standings.
Finland will have history on their side in Budapest, having gone unbeaten in each of their previous six games against Belarus, picking up two wins and four draws since their first encounter back in March 2006.

Whispers predicts: Belarus 1-2 Finland
While Belarus secured a comfortable victory over San Marino, they can expect a tougher challenge on Tuesday against a well-drilled Finland side.
Finland have held their own in this fixture, and while we expect Belarus to put up a fight, we are backing Friis’s men to come out on top, which is currently priced at 1/1 (2.00).
We fancy over 2.5 goals here, which sits at 5/4 (2.25), and with four of Finland’s last five games seeing both teams score, BTTS – Yes at 1/1 (2.00) is another favourable option.
Finland to win + BTTS – Yes is priced at 4/1 (5.00), which is perhaps the value bet for us, while the correct score market has a correct score of 1-2 at 17/2 (9.50).
> Match result: Finland to win at 1/1 (2.00) | Likelihood: Possible
> BTTS – Yes at 1/1 (2.00) | Likelihood: Possible
> Correct score: 1-2 at 17/2 (9.50) | Likelihood: Outsider
