Barcelona head into El Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday needing to avoid defeat to successfully defend the La Liga title they regained last season.

In their second term under Hansi Flick, the Blaugrana have again been dominant and led Spain's top flight for the majority of the campaign, winning 29 of their 34 matches to amass 88 points, while boasting a perfect record of 17 victories from 17 home games.

The Catalan giants have pulled clear of their rivals in recent months with an eye-catching run of nine straight La Liga wins, with a Champions League quarter-final exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid being the only blemish on a perfect record since mid-March.

They head into the meeting with confidence, having won five of the last six El Clasico contests, only losing in the reverse fixture in Madrid in October, and their last nine La Liga matches, most recently prevailing away at Osasuna last weekend thanks to goals from Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.

Now needing a draw or win to get over the line with three games to spare in Spain's biggest club contest, but continuing to face the absence of star winger Lamine Yamal while Raphinha is yet to feature since his own injury, Barcelona will set out to avenge the October defeat at the weekend and secure the trophy with a 10th straight league win.

Their visitors, meanwhile, make the trip aiming to keep the title race alive and complete a La Liga double over Barca, which they last did in 2023-24, albeit having since lost to their rivals in January in the Spanish Super Cup.

Real Madrid's bid to regain the Spanish title looks set to fall short this term, as they trail the leaders by 11 points having earned 77 points from their 34 matches, winning 24 and losing five of those.

Under the management of Alvaro Arbeloa in recent months, Los Blancos have lost ground alongside a Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich, losing one and drawing two of their last five league outings, albeit having returned to winning ways in a 2-0 away triumph over Espanyol last weekend.

That came without Kylian Mbappe, who is set to return on Sunday to the dismay of many Real Madrid fans with the French forward seemingly growing unpopular in the Spanish capital, while other off-field issues have plagued the club in recent weeks including the altercation between midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni, which may cost both a place on Sunday.

Now needing a perfect end to the season to stand a chance of regaining the title, Real Madrid head to the Spotify Camp Nou aiming to keep their hopes alive with an El Clasico triumph.
