Despite reaching the final of the Copa del Rey and the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, Atletico Madrid finished last season without a trophy.
After their fourth-placed finish last campaign, Diego Simeone has been heavily backed in the transfer window, spending over €140m recruiting Cristian Romero from Tottenham, Kang-In Lee from Paris Saint-Germain, Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon, and Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen.
Los Colchoneros have also seen the departures of several players like Antoine Griezmann, Thiago Almada, and Nahuel Molina this summer.
The hosts will not be able to call upon the services of Alexander Sorloth for the La Liga opener, as the Norwegian is ruled out because of a muscular injury. There are also doubts surrounding the availability of Julian Alvarez, who has tried to force a move out of the club.
On the other hand, Malaga went through the La Liga 2 play-offs to secure promotion to the Spanish top flight after an eight-season absence.
The visitors have had an interesting run in recent years, as they were competing in the third tier of Spanish football just two years ago.
Although head coach Juan Funes has not made a splash in the transfer window, the 43-year-old has reinforced his squad with season-long loan deals for Jose Salinas and Juan Cruz, while former Espanyol defender Fernando Calero has joined the club on a free transfer.
Malaga have a few players sidelined with injuries, as Adrian Nino (thigh), Diego Murillo (cruciate ligament), Fernando Calero (broken rib), and Carlos Dotor (knee) are all ruled out of this clash, while Aaron Ochoa, who was sent off in June's play-off final against Almeria, will serve a one-match suspension.
While this will be the first clash between these teams since February 2018, it is worth mentioning that Atletico Madrid were victorious in the last five H2Hs, keeping four clean sheets in the process.
Interestingly, Malaga's last trip to this stadium was Atletico's first-ever game at Riyadh Air Metropolitano in September 2017.

At 3/10 (1.30), Atletico Madrid are considered favourites by the bookies ahead of this clash.
