Atletico Madrid will square off against Bayern Munich in a UEFA Champions League cracker at Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday night.

The Spanish outfit come into the game with almost impeccable defensive organisation, having kept four clean sheets in their last five games across all competitions, while the German giants parade a dangerous attacking side that has netted 19 goals in their last five outings in all competitions.

Interestingly, behind the brilliant defensive and attacking prowess possessed by either side, David Hancko and Harry Kane headline pivotal roles at opposite ends of the pitch. Keeping in mind that the former is a central defender and the latter a centre forward, it is worth noting that these players will not only have contrasting responsibilities for their teams but will also engage in a key direct battle on the night.

The Slovak will be tasked with keeping the lethal English attacker at bay, while the 2026 Ballon d'Or holder will look to extend his scoring streak in this competition to 11 games. Here, FootballWhispers compares the two players statistically, using their data from this season's UEFA Champions League.

Given Hancko and Kane's positions, their output naturally leans toward defensive versus offensive data, with both excelling in their respective roles.

Both have played every single minute (270 across three games) in the Champions League this season, showcasing how important they are to their respective coaches' starting XIs.

The primary responsibility for the Atleti man is to focus on defensive organisation, ball progression, and preventing opposition chances rather than creating them, while Kane is tasked with scoring, opening up spaces, and creating chances for his teammates. As a result, Hancko has 13 clearances, no assists, no big chances created so far, and 0.20 expected goals (xG), while the Ballon d'Or holder has four goals to his name, two assists, and a 3.29 xG.

Kane has registered 15 shots, with seven (46.7%) of them on target, while Hancko has attempted four shots, with just one (25%) on target. It is no surprise that the Englishman's creative distribution and high shot volume put him at the forefront of the attacking comparison metrics.

While Hancko has fallen short in most parameters, he excelled over his counterpart in passing accuracy and aerial duels won; the Slovak completed 178/206 passes at 86.41% and won six aerial duels, compared to Kane's 56/69 pass completion at 81.16% with four aerial duels won. The Atleti defender has also registered 18 ball recoveries, 16 more than the former Tottenham player, and has never been dispossessed, unlike Kane, who has been twice.

However, Hancko and Kane have a lot in common: neither player has committed an error leading to a goal, made a last-man tackle, or received a yellow or red card. Taking everything thus far and their level of discipline into account, both players will definitely be locked in a key battle as they look to crack each other's resolve and gain an advantage that could tilt the result in their favour.

Although Atleti and Bayern have both registered one clean sheet in the Champions League, the Spanish outfit have not conceded in four of their last five games across all competitions. With Jan Oblak in goal and the central pairing of Hancko and Marc Pubill looking hard to break down in recent times, only time will tell if Kane and his Bayern teammates can blow Simeone's well-organised defence apart.
