After PSV Eindhoven cruised to the league title last season, Ajax are now part of a four-team contending pack aiming to ensure a genuine title race this term and for the first time since 2013, the top five teams are within five points of one another 10 games into the campaign.

Michel’s side failed to win either of their first two matches after the September/October break but have since responded with three consecutive victories. The most recent was a 2-1 triumph over Sparta Rotterdam, where Tolu Arokodare began his pursuit of 200 career goals, having reached 100 against Atalanta.

Sitting second in the table and just three points behind leaders Feyenoord, De Godenzonen could finish the weekend top on goal difference, but could also drop as low as fifth with a defeat, highlighting the slim margins at the summit.

Ajax beat AZ four times in five meetings between January 2021 and March 2022, but few could have predicted that the Amsterdam giants would fail to win any of the next 11 encounters. Three of those came last season, with a 6-0 KNVB Beker thrashing providing the biggest headline.

Home form is typically crucial for any title contender, yet Saturday’s hosts have managed just one win from five league matches at the Johan Cruyff Arena this season, far from ideal for Ajax’s championship hopes.

AZ Alkmaar started the season in impressive fashion, winning their opening five matches and emerging as early title favourites. However, their momentum has stalled in recent weeks, with just one victory from their last five outings.

Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Twente at the AFAS Stadion means Leeroy Echteld’s side are now winless in three for the first time this season, and it marked their first home league game without scoring since April 2025.

Having boasted the joint-best defensive record in the division prior to their latest defeat, De Kaasboeren now have their work cut out at the top end of the pitch – unsurprising given the summer departure of last season’s top scorer, Troy Parrott – if they are to mount a serious Eredivisie title push.

Like Ajax, AZ have also been adept at scoring late goals, with the two teams combining for 11 goals in the final 15 minutes this season. That suggests no one should leave early, regardless of the score heading into the closing stages.

AZ’s current run – facing Twente, Ajax, and Juventus – was widely viewed as their toughest stretch of the season. Having come away empty-handed from the opening test, Saturday’s visitors will now be determined to bounce back.
