AEK Athens followed last week's disappointing 3-1 loss at PAOK in the Greek Cup with a 2-0 league defeat against neighbours Panathinaikos over the weekend.

Marko Nikolic's men had a great start to their campaign, stringing together an 11-match unbeaten run across all competitions, including a 1-0 victory over LASK Linz in their Champions League opener.

However, the hosts have lost four of five games played since then, with two of those coming in this competition. They are now 29th in the league phase with three points from a possible nine.

First-choice goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha missed the recent derby defeat to Panathinaikos with a wrist injury, which puts his availability in doubt for this clash.

Luka Jovic is set to face his former club for the first time since leaving Real Madrid in the summer of 2022, joining attacking partner Barnabas Varga, who has scored nine goals across all competitions this season, up front.

On the other hand, Real Madrid cruised to a comfortable 3-1 victory at Racing Santander over the weekend, extending their winning streak across all competitions to six matches.

In the last two weeks, Jose Mourinho’s troops have ended Barcelona’s perfect La Liga run as well as Racing Santander’s unbeaten home record. In the Champions League, they have also conquered an Inter side previously undefeated in 20 games and a Roma team unbeaten in eight.

Los Blancos have had a perfect La Liga campaign so far, with three wins in as many fixtures. They have scored 10 goals in this competition and are fourth in the league phase.

Rodrygo Goes (ACL) and Raul Asencio (leg) continue their respective recovery processes; they are the only absentees for Real Madrid, especially now that Fede Valverde, who was unavailable against Racing Santander, has returned to team training.

Following Sunday's win against Racing Club, Mourinho made it clear he will manage workloads due to the busy stretch, noting that the players who featured for 90 minutes will not play in midweek. Trent Alexander-Arnold or Denzel Dumfries could feature at right-back, depending on Valverde's match readiness. Antonio Rudiger, Eduardo Camavinga, Alvaro Carreras, Carlos Espi, and Vinicius Junior are all expected to be in the starting XI.

This will be the fifth clash between these sides, and their first encounter since October 2002. Both teams share a 1-2-1 win-draw-loss record in the last four H2Hs, with the last two ending in stalemates.

Interestingly, AEK Athens have won only three of their 20 previous clashes with Spanish sides (D5, L12), while Real Madrid have a 7-6-2 win-draw-loss record in 15 previous skirmishes with Greek opponents.

Whispers Predicts:AEK Athens 1-3 Real Madrid

Priced at 3/10 (1.30), Real Madrid are considered favourites by the bookmakers ahead of this fixture.

These teams are on opposite sides in terms of recent form, and considering the difference in quality between both squads, anything other than a comfortable victory for Real Madrid would be surprising.

Four of AEK Athens' last five outings have gone above the 3.5-goal threshold, and this can be backed at 4/5 (1.80).

We also fancy BTTS – Yes at 4/6 (1.67), as was the case in eight of the visiting team's last 10 matches. Anyone looking to wager on these statistical trends can sign up using a Betfred bonus code to unlock the latest welcome offer.
