🔥 Our Hot tip

Under 2.5 goals

None of Accrington's last four competitive matches have produced more than two goals.

Accrington Stanley will take on Oldham in the preliminary round of this season's Carabao Cup this week, with both teams looking to qualify for the first round of the competition.

The preliminary round is something that has only been introduced this year to accommodate the increased number of Premier League teams in Europe.

Accrington Stanley vs Oldham prediction: Don't expect goals

Key stats

  • Oldham's opening match of the season at the weekend finished 0-0.
  • Excluding the playoffs, none of Oldham's last six fixtures have produced more than two goals.
  • Only one team has scored in two of Accrington's last three matches.

Correct score prediction: Accrington Stanley 1-0 Oldham

Neither of these two teams looked particularly good going forward at the weekend, but they did both look solid at the back. Although both managers will make changes, the tactics will largely be the same and it's difficult to envisage anything other than a tense night with few chances at either end.

Most recent H2Hs: A first meeting in four years

This is the first time in four years that Accrington and Oldham have met, due to Oldham's tenure in non-league football. On the most recent occasion in 2021, the two teams played out a 0-0 draw in the EFL Cup second round before Oldham won the tie via a penalty shootout. The same scenario is very much in play this week.

Accrington preview: Fringe players to get a chance to shine

Accrington Stanley manager John Doolan is expected to make plenty of changes for this one, with the club prioritising a strong start in the league. The likes of Josh Woods and Kelsey Mooney, who both came on as substitutes at the weekend, could start the game alongside a string of fringe players.

Predicted lineup: Wright (GK), Smith, Rawson, Matthews, Love, Conneely, Coyle, Woods,  Henderson, Money, Woods

Oldham preview: Taking it a tad more seriously

After a four-year absence, Oldham are back in the EFL Cup, and they will perhaps treat the competition with a little bit more respect, even if it is a preliminary round. Still, a good performance next weekend would be traded for an early exit in the cup as they look to ensure they don't drop back down to the National League.

Predicted lineup: Donaghy (GK), Ogle, Daniels, Sutton, Leake, Hawkes, Woods, Hammond, Hannant, Waters, Haratt

Player to watch: Ben Woods

Ben Woods

Ben Woods was arguably Accrington Stanley's best player last season, and without the wide man, there is every chance that the club would have been relegated to the National League. Woods scored nine league goals and provided six assists last season, and he will be keen to get off the mark for the current campaign on Tuesday night.
