Accrington Stanley preview: Whalley to lead the charge

Accrington Stanley concluded their preseason with a 4-1 win over Rotherham, which means they arrive in the new campaign from a winning position despite their shortcomings in earlier preseason friendlies.

Opening the season at home, Stanley faithful will be pleased to have both last season's joint-top scorers with nine goals: Benjamin Woods and Shaun Whalley still at the club, as both players played crucial roles in the team's survival last term.

Woods is expected to start in midfield, while Whalley and Charlie Caton could start up front in a 3-4-1-2 formation.

Predicted lineup: Kelly (GK), Rawson, Matthews, Coyle, Sinclair, Woods, Grant, Love, Brown, Caton & Whalley.

Gillingham preview: A clean bill of health

Gillingham may not have achieved their goals last term, but they survived the drop, which, for some, is an opportunity to try again this season. The visitors finished 17th, four places better than their opponents.

The Gills did summer business, bringing in Seb Palmer-Houlden, Andy Smith, Sam Vokes, and Lenni Rae Cirino. A couple of these guys could be in contention to make their competitive debuts this Saturday.

Joseph Gbode did well in pre-season, scoring three goals in his last two matches. The 20-year-old forward may start for Gillingham in their first away game of the season.

Predicted lineup: Morris (GK), Smith, Ogie, Masterson, Hutton, McKenzie, Little, Clark, Dack, Gbode & Palmer-Houlden.
