Back in the Primeira Liga for the first time since going down in the 1988-89 campaign, it has been a difficult return to the Portuguese top flight for Academico Viseu, who have managed just two points from the first nine available.
Coming off the back of an impressive 2025-26 campaign, where they finished second in the Segunda Liga standings, beating third-placed Torreense on goal difference to clinch automatic promotion, Academico Viseu kicked off the season on an impressive note, fighting back from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw with Benfica at the Estadio da Luz on August 9.
However, Os Viriatos failed to build on their opening-day result six days later, when they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Santa Clara at the Estádio Municipal do Fontelo, before throwing away a two-goal lead in a disappointing 2-2 stalemate with Maritimo last Saturday.
First-half goals from Andre Clovis and Soufiane Messeguem put Academico in a commanding two-goal lead and on course for their first win of the campaign, but Paulo Henrique and Adrian Butzke hit back for Maritimo in the final 20 minutes to force a share of the spoils.
While head coach Bruno Pinheiro will be hoping to finally get off the mark this weekend, having taken over at the helm of affairs in July, next is the stern challenge of an opposing side, whom Academico have failed to get the better of in their most recent three meetings, including three defeats in their three encounters since a 1-1 stalemate in February 2020.
On the other hand, Porto maintained their 100% record this season last weekend as they secured a 2-0 victory over a spirited Arouca side when the two teams squared off at the Estadio do Dragao.
Having won both their opening two games, Porto and Arouca canceled each other’s efforts in a keenly contested first half, but Gabri Veiga broke the deadlock in the 67th minute to put the hosts in front, before Borja Sainz netted in the 88th minute to make sure of the victory.
Prior to that, Porto kicked off their title defence with a 2-0 victory over Alverca in the league opener on August 8, six days before seeing off Rio Ave by the same scoreline through goals from Nehuen Perez and Sainz.
Having clinched the Primeira Liga crown last season, when they finished six points above runners-up Sporting Lisbon, Francesco Farioli’s men head into the new campaign aiming to secure consecutive league titles, a feat last achieved by Sporting Lisbon between 2024 and 2025.
