Arsenal have been linked with Barcelona defender Xavi Espart after CaughtOffside reported on 18 October that they and Tottenham had scouted him.
Barcelona announced a new contract for the 19-year-old, running to 30 June 2030, on 8 October.
TeamTalk added on 21 October that Liverpool are also monitoring him and that his release clause sits well above €100m.
Xavi Espart to Arsenal rated ”Unlikely”
The Football Whispers Index scores every transfer rumour across five weighted factors. Read how it works here.
Xavi Espart to Arsenal
The Whispers Index gives Xavi Espart to Arsenal 36 out of 100, which sits in the Unlikely band.
The index weighs the money involved, Arsenal's need, the player's motivation, Barcelona's incentive to sell and how credible the reporting is.
The clearest point in favour is that Arsenal posted €821.7m of revenue in Deloitte's January 2026 Money League, enough to carry a fee at the reported clause level.
The clearest points against are the contract to 2030 and the lack of any reported approach, bid or negotiation.
The most decisive fact is that Barcelona agreed the new deal on 8 October, ten days before the Arsenal interest was reported.
Financial viability
- Barcelona's release clause for Espart is reported above €100m by both CaughtOffside and TeamTalk, roughly 12% of the €821.7m revenue Arsenal posted in Deloitte's January 2026 Money League.
- CaughtOffside reported on 18 October that Barcelona would want an offer of about €40m to €50m plus bonuses before considering talks, so the price is not settled.
- Arsenal's highest earner is Bukayo Saka on £300,000 a week, and no wage offer for Espart has been reported.
- Espart's contract was extended to 30 June 2030 and announced on 8 October, so there is no expiry date forcing Barcelona to sell.
Both CaughtOffside and TeamTalk put the release clause above €100m, although Barcelona have not disclosed it officially.
That is roughly 12% of the €821.7m Arsenal posted in Deloitte's January 2026 Money League, so the money is affordable on paper.
CaughtOffside also reported that Barcelona would want about €40m to €50m plus bonuses before considering talks, which shows how far apart the quoted figures are.
No wage offer has been reported, and Bukayo Saka's £300,000 a week is the ceiling in Arsenal's squad.
The extension to 30 June 2030 means Barcelona face no expiry pressure that might push them towards a sale.
Buying club need
- Arsenal already have Ben White and Jurrien Timber at right-back, with Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly at left-back.
- Espart can play right-back, left-back and defensive midfield, and has started seven of Barcelona's first nine LaLiga games this season.
- He is 19, born on 21 May 2007, and played only 164 LaLiga minutes in 2025/26 before this season's breakthrough.
Arsenal have Ben White and Jurrien Timber at right-back and Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly at left-back, so there is no obvious vacancy.
Espart can cover right-back, left-back and defensive midfield, which is useful versatility but not a position Arsenal are short in.
He has started seven of Barcelona's first nine LaLiga games this season after only 164 league minutes in 2025/26.
A fee near €100m for a player with that little senior football is a large bet on potential.
Player motivation
- Espart's new Barcelona deal was announced on 8 October, less than two weeks before the Arsenal links surfaced.
- Opta rank Barcelona fourth in the world on 98.2 and Arsenal first on 100.0, so the move would be a marginal step up in level at most.
- At Barcelona he is a regular starter, while Arsenal's full-back slots are held by White, Timber, Calafiori and Lewis-Skelly.
- No on-record comments from Espart about leaving Barcelona have been reported.
Espart's new contract, announced on 8 October, is the clearest public signal of what he wants.
No on-record comments from him about leaving Barcelona have been reported.
Opta rank Barcelona fourth in the world on 98.2 and Arsenal first on 100.0, so the step up in level is marginal.
At Barcelona he is playing regularly, while at Arsenal he would compete with White, Timber, Calafiori and Lewis-Skelly.
Selling club incentive
- El Nacional reported that Barcelona consider Espart untouchable and would turn down even €80m.
- Barcelona have full-back cover in Jules Kounde, Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde.
- Barcelona's 8 October announcement did not disclose a release clause or a sale price.
- Espart has started seven of Barcelona's first nine LaLiga games, so he is part of Hansi Flick's regular rotation.
El Nacional reported that Barcelona consider Espart untouchable and would turn down even €80m.
The new contract also removes the leverage a buyer normally has over a club with a player entering his final years.
Barcelona have Jules Kounde, Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde at full-back, so a sale would not leave them short, but nothing suggests they want to test that.
Barcelona's 8 October announcement did not disclose a release clause or a sale price.
Market momentum
- CaughtOffside reported on 18 October that Arsenal and Tottenham had scouted Espart, and the same report rates a January move as highly unlikely.
- TeamTalk reported on 21 October that Liverpool are also monitoring him and put the clause well above €100m.
- No outlet has reported an approach to Barcelona, a bid or negotiations.
CaughtOffside's 18 October report is the origin of most of the coverage, and it rates a January move as highly unlikely.
TeamTalk's 21 October report is a second origin, adding Liverpool and the clause figure.
CaughtOffside names Tottenham and TeamTalk names Liverpool, so Arsenal are one of several clubs monitoring him rather than leading a race.
No outlet has reported an approach to Barcelona, a bid or talks.
Xavi Espart to Arsenal: Will or won't it happen?
For the deal to happen, Barcelona would have to change their stance within months of tying him to 2030, and Arsenal would have to commit a fee near €100m to a teenager.
Nothing in the reporting points that way so far.
The score will move if Arsenal make a formal approach or a tier-one journalist reports talks.
Until then, this is a club monitoring a teenager it has no realistic route to sign.
