San Diego preview: Struggles on home turf

MLS newcomers San Diego were condemned to back-to-back home defeats for the first time in the league as they fell to a 1-0 loss against Toronto FC on Thursday morning.

Canadian midfielder Theo Corbeanu made the difference at the Snapdragon Stadium as he converted his 20th-minute penalty to inspire Toronto to just their fifth league win of the campaign.

Prior to that, San Diego saw their four-game winning streak come to an end on July 6 courtesy of a narrow 4-3 loss against Houston Dynamo, one week before bouncing back in a 2-1 victory over Chicago Fire at Soldier Field.

Despite their recent slump, head coach Mikey Varas will be delighted with his side's performance in what has been a stellar debut campaign as they sit top of the Western Conference standings with 42 points from 23 matches.

Predicted lineup: Sisniega (GK), Verhoeven, Mcvey, Pilcher, Negri, Valakari, Tverskov, De la Torre, Dreyer, Angel & Mighten

Vancouver Whitecaps preview: Eyeing top spot

Vancouver Whitecaps made light work of Houston Dynamo on Thursday as they cruised to a 3-0 victory when the two sides squared off at the Shell Energy Stadium.

Houston Dynamo were made to rue their wasteful display in front of goal as Emmanuel Sabbi, Sebastian Berhalter and Brian White all hit the target to hand the Whitecaps all three points.

Head coach Jesper Sorensen will hope Thursday’s victory can serve as a springboard for a fine run of form as Vancouver had lost four of the five matches preceding their victory over Houston.

This weekend’s visitors have picked up 41 points from their 22 MLS games so far to sit second in the Western Conference table, just one point behind San Diego, albeit with one game in hand.

Predicted lineup: Takaoka (GK), Laborda, Utvik, Veselinovic, Johnson, Priso-Mbongue, Berhalter, Sabbi, Ocampo, White & Rios

Players to watch: Anders Dreyer

Signed from Belgian outfit Anderlecht in January, Anders Dreyer has been a standout performer and a driving force behind San Diego’s impressive debut campaign.

The Danish striker has racked up 11 goals in 23 MLS appearances and is well on course to smash his personal-best league tally, which came in the 2023-24 campaign, when he scored 19 goals in the Belgian Pro League.

Dreyer also boasts 13 league assists under his belt and sits top of the MLS goal contributions charts, two more than Lionel Messi, who has racked up 24 goal contributions so far.

The 27-year-old endured an uncharacteristically quiet outing against Toronto last time out but should form the front three with Tomas Angel and English forward Alex Mighten.
