While the World Cup doesn't start until next week, this is a rare opportunity for a nation to put down a marker before it all begins.

For the USA, a win over one of European football's powerhouses would do wonders for confidence in the squad. If they can overcome Germany, then all of a sudden, the impossible dream of winning the World Cup will suddenly feel possible.

Mauricio Pochettino has done a good job with the USMNT since taking over in 2024, reaching the Gold Cup final and enjoying plenty of positive results in friendly matches ahead of the World Cup.

However, his side are yet to overcome a European team, which makes Saturday's clash all the more important, particularly as it is their final chance to do so before their World Cup opener against Paraguay next weekend.

For the match against Germany, Pochettino is expected to go with his strongest possible XI here, with Chris Richards the only doubt with an ankle injury.

As for Germany, there is a sense that they are going under the radar in the build-up to the World Cup.

All the talk is about England, Spain, Portugal and France as the supposed European contenders, but if you look at Germany's recent form, you would be foolish to rule them out.

After being knocked out in the group stages in 2018 and 2022, the bar is low this time around for Julian Nagelsmann, but the former Bayern Munich boss will be eyeing far more than group stage qualification.

His side were rampant during qualifying, winning all but one of their matches, and they have now won eight matches in a row, scoring at least three goals in five of them.

Like Pochettino, Nagelsmann will want a look at his strongest XI here ahead of their first World Cup game against Curacao next Sunday. Kai Havertz is available for selection after joining up with the squad late due to his Champions League final commitments.

Whispers Predicts: USA 1-3 Germany

Germany's form is too hard to ignore here, as is the USA's poor recent record against European nations. Germany to win the match has been best priced at 8/13.

Nagelsmann has created a team who have been scoring goals for fun over the past year, and they are averaging four goals per game across their last four matches. Germany to score over 2.5 goals has been priced at 6/4.

Jamal Musiala netted the final goal in Germany's 4-0 win over Finland last week. Musiala to score anytime has been priced at 2/1.
