USA and Chile return to action on Wednesday morning when they go head-to-head in a friendly matchup at Energizer Park in St. Louis, Missouri. USA turned in a dominant team display on Friday when they cruised to a 4-1 friendly victory over Peru at the Inter&Co Stadium in their first outing since their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Gianluca Lapadula netted in the 15th minute to cancel out Justin Elis’s early openers and end the first half level, but Malik Tilllman, Julian Hall and Sebastian Berhalter all hit the target in a second-half attacking show of class to sink Peru.
This came just three months after the USA showed their potential on the biggest stages, reaching the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup before crashing out at the hands of Belgium.
Having finished as Group D winners with six points from a possible nine, Mauricio Pochettino’s men secured a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 on July 2, five days before suffering a humbling 4-1 loss against Belgium in the round of 16.
Next up for USA is the challenge of an opposing side who are unbeaten in seven of their last 10 encounters, picking up four wins and three draws since their first meeting in July 1950.
On the other hand, it has been a tough year of football for Chile, who suffered a 1-0 defeat against Canada in a friendly matchup at the BMO Field on Saturday morning.
In a heated contest that saw Lucas Cependa and Gabriel Suazo receive their marching orders, Jonathan David’s 12th-minute strike proved decisive for Canada as they held on to see out the win in Toronto.
Since picking up three successive victories in their final three matches last year, Chile have now lost three of their five matches across all competitions since the turn of the year, including a 2-1 friendly defeat against Portugal on June 6 and a 4-1 loss to New Zealand in the FIFA Series back in March.
Nicolas Andres Cordova’s men will now look to turn their fortunes around ahead of the next competitive football cycle, having missed out on the World Cup after a dire outing in the qualifiers, where they finished rock-bottom in the standings with 11 points from 18 games.
