Union Saint-Gilloise will raise the curtain on their latest European bid on Tuesday, as they look to move within one tie of another Champions League league phase appearance.
They featured last year as Belgian champions and fell just short of earning a playoff tie, having finished 27th on nine points and behind four teams on goal difference – including Tuesday's opponents – winning three and losing five of their eight matches while scoring eight goals and conceding 17.
On the domestic front, meanwhile, Les Unionestes fell short of defending their Belgian Pro League title in 2025-26, despite heading into the playoffs atop the table, eventually finishing second and four points behind winners Club Brugge having won six and lost two of their playoff matches after boasting by far the division's best defensive record in the regular season, conceding just 17 goals in 30 games – 18 fewer than the next best.
David Hubert's team played their first competitive game of the season on Friday, meeting Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup and prevailing at the Jan Breydel Stadion, having drawn level at a goal apiece through Kevin Mac Allister 13 minutes from time and finished normal time level before winning a penalty shootout by scoring all five of their spot kicks.
Union Saint-Gilloise now head back into European action with the hopes of building an aggregate lead on home soil to take into next week's away leg.
Their opponents, meanwhile, head to Belgium in the middle of their domestic campaign and with fond memories of the Champions League from last season.
Bodo/Glimt also ended last year's Champions League league phase on nine points, but a superior goal difference saw them earn a playoff spot, in which they progressed to the round of 16 with a 5-2 aggregate win over Inter Milan before falling just short against Sporting Lisbon, winning 3-0 at home and losing 3-0 away before their opponents scored two decisive goals in extra time.
